Hi guys,

I'm building Trumpeter's BRDM-2 (early) and the 9P148 Konkurs. I wanted to build both as East German vehicles, but noticed something on the Dragon kit (that I don't own) and then checked against some photos on the net.

Did all NVA BRDM-2s (9P148 included) had those "thingies" below the hull and behind the rear wheels?

I checked Trumpeter's SPW-40 (BTR-70) and noticed they give you these parts in PE. The "normal" BTR-70 kit doesn't have them, so I'm guessing it was an East German thing.

Thanks in advance,
Ricardo

They appear to be wheel chocks.

Thanks. I had no idea what they were.

I'm just not sure how safe it is to assume that some might not carry these all the time.

Just about every NVA vehicle carries some sort of wheel chock. Their 9P148 and Strela-1 don't appear to carry them though, and if they do, they're not mounted the way the standard BRDM-2 have them.

Hi Erik,

thanks for the reply. Then I'll take a chance here and build the 9P148 as an East German and make the BRDM-2 as a Soviet Naval Infantry one.

That's right, this is an NVA modification. Wheeled vehicles carried wheel chocks, tracked vehicles had them for tracks ("Verladekeile"), they were for railway transportation. Here on Armorama you can find more info, e.g.:

Verladekeile NVA

Be also aware of those very often modified headlights and the night camo lights at the rear (google search for "Nachtmarschanlage NVA" helps...) when you go for an NVA version...

Thanks for the information, Marian.

Do you think it's safe to say that the 9P148, for some reason, didn't carry them (or didn't all the time)?

As for the lights, I hadn't realised that until now, so thanks for the tip.

Any suggestions for Trumpeter's SPW-70, which is next on my list?

Well, I think it's safe to say, that not all of them at those extra wheel chocks mounted. Quite some pictures show only the mounts themselves (without the actual chocks) and others even without even the mounts... See the pics I posted down here (sorry for the bad quality of the shots, but I guess you will get the story anyway...)

And what is it you want to know about the BTR-70?

Hi,

thanks for the pictures! They will be useful

About the BTR-70, I don't know if you had the chance to see Trumpeter's SPW-70 kit. I was wondering if, out of the box, it allows for a good representation of an East German BTR-70 or if there are a few (major) changes needed.
