Hello,
Anybody use an alternative to dullcote? Being that a can cost me roughly $8 and I go thru it alot. Ive tried a krylon flat clear which was a disaster, I also tried Model Masters flat clear acrylic thats in a bottle. Shot it out of my airbrush with ok results. Dullcote is the best ive used, just dont want to pay the high $$$
Thank you

Microscope satin or flat. They are true acrylics, though. Rust-o-Leum works well.

Do you not use an Airbrush? If you do, you should try the DullCote in the Pink label bottle (1&3/4 FL Ounce) and mix with Lacquer thinner. Its cheaper than the spray can and it mixes 50/50 or more so basically you wind up with double the amount - last a good while. I recently switched to it and i do love it.
If you use Rattle cans exclusively, i have havent a clue whats good. Like you, i tried Krylon once.....ONCE!
Good Luck,
Gary

Sometimes I use Vallejo matt varnish, but most times I use a Tamiya paint thinned with Isopropyl Alcohol. Whatever color of Tamiya acrylic you use, thinning with alcohol results in a dead-flat finish. Since I typically finish my models with a highly thinned mixture of an appropriate color to tone down and blend all the layers beneath, I simply use Tamiya and alcohol for that so that I also end up with a flat finish.

Hey Sean,
You might want to try Liquitex Matt Varnish. It comes in a very generous 237 mL bottle and you can pick one up at Michael's. (or whatever is nearby of that ilk). A bottle is about $15.00 but if you have a 40% off coupon the price runs about 9 bucks and it lasts a VERY LONG time.
Good luck.
Rick

Sean sorry to use your post but I want to ask Rick a question. Rick do you thin the liqutex or do you use it straight and how many coats PS I use an airbrush normally spray at 10 psi or lower and very rarely higher psi

Ronnie,
No problem, I'm sure Sean doesn't mind I usually just fire it straight but I have thinned it with lacquer thinner as well as water, although I have had easier cleanup in the AB with the lacquer thinner.
Cheers,
Rick

Your welcome Sean and I woould like to say that I use the liquitex gloss varnish as ell and I only use the Vallejo line and the liquitex products seem to be almost an exact match as far as acrylics go I also noticed that if I spray the varnish on with to high PSI I tend to get little white specks of what appear to be resin I usually touch that up with a dark brown so it looks like mud dirt or pait chiping
