Hi folks, I would like to ask if the following decal actions are correct or not?
1) Spray Tamiya clear coat on area (with flat base)that I would like to put decal
2) Drop decal into hot water for 10 second, and then put decal on.
3) Release air bubble with a cotton stick.
4) Apply Mr. hobby decal setter.
Any advises would be highly appreciated! Sorry for my poor english!

Hi Leung,

People recommend giving the coat of clear to the whole model instead of an area. They also recommend givign another coat of clear once the decals have been set.

Regarding Mr Hobby decal setter I can't tell you since I've never used it. Someone who has used it might help you if steps 3 and 4 are correct.

Best regards,
Angel

Hi, yes the clear coat should be smooth gloss, nice and shiny, so more than one coat maybe worth doing.

Just warm water will do, not too hot.

If the surface is shiny / glossy, you should not get any air bubbles, just gently press the decal with a piece of moist tissue on your finger on to model.

I also don't know about Mr Decal... I guess it should have instructions? Sometimes you brush solution on first, and then on top as well. Be careful once the solution is on the decal as it may make the decal easy to damage, so take care not to tear it.

Yes, coat over it again once dry.

Apply layer of Clear Gloss (Tamiya X22, for example)
Allow to cure for 24 hours
Dip decal in warm water for about 15-20 seconds
Allow decal to sit on wet decal paper
Apply water to place you are going to apply the decal
Rub decal on wet decal paper so it picks up more glue
Slide decal off of paper into position
Position with wet fingertip, toothpick, wet paintbrush, or tip of tweezers
Allow decal to sit for a few minutes
Press downward on decal with a cotton swab to remove water or air bubbles
Apply a setting solution, like Solvaset
Let decal DRY THOROUGHLY. Prick and bubbles with a needle, and apply decal solvent as many times as needed until the decal conforms to your liking.
Allow decal to dry overnight
Apply a varnish to protect decal.

Yes. I agree after the decals are in place I use the red bottle here. Then some more. Then wait then use some more and ... After several cycles of decal softener and drying, the decal conforms like paint. Next gloss and flat clear coats as the others have suggested to protect. Be patient, be flexible and keep trying. Best of luck!
