I anm assuming that you are refering to the clear paint. Like flat clear or gloss clear. It is enamel or acrylic coating just like a colored paint used to seal the base colors or to change the finish from flat to shiny or vice a versa. I hope that this helps you out

A word of caution here, if you refer to the flat or gloss clear, it is not intended to be applied to the model on it's own. It's meant to be mixed with the color you are applying to your model.
If you apply it on it's own, you will most likely end up with a milky transparent layer. I've heard many a modellers lament over this.

I have been spraying flat clear over the base paint of all my models for years. I have never mixed it with any colors. I used the Model Masters by Testors. I have never had and milky look ever.

Tamiya's paint that is called clear, matt or semi gloss....is to add to a color...for example if you want to change a flat black to a semigloss black...you would add some clear to it....or if you wanted a particular color of a Tamiya paints that isn't made in a matt color....you would add the matt to it.
It is not...I repeat not...for spraying over your finished project in order to make an over all matt, gloss or semi-gloss finish....all this will do is turn your project into a milky white color.
This is not the same as using Testor's MM gloss, or matt bottles or sprays.
As far as the clear...I would think you could take some clear and add some color to it...to make it a clear color...similar to Tamiya's clear red or yellow

T's GLOSS can be applied to a finished model safely by itself. Well, the old bottle I have can. I have used one for a number of years, especially on larger scale eyes. I wouldn't be surprised if a chemist (US style, not a Brithish chemist) found it to be repackaged "Future". #:-)

OK I just read all the posts to this and I must say...most of them even confused me and I've been using tamiya paints for years and years with great results!!!
Tamiya Clear is a gloss coat that can be used by itself over other paints to make them well....glossy......now their flat is only to be mixed with other paints and not used by itself.
So the answer to your questions is....it's a gloss coat
