With very little reference material on the French Cavalry during WW1, I am wondering whether troopers actually carried their swords on the right-hand side. There appears to be some disagreement on this question; perhaps someone can enlighten me.
Also, does anyone have any information on the uniform insignia colours (including collar facings) of the cavalry. Again, there are conflicting versions in the few sources.

A source that might help you out is published by Histoire et Collections entitled Officers and Soldiers of the French Army 1914, August - December. Authored by Andre Jouineau. IN this book are full color images of the Cuirassiers, Dragoons, Chasseurs a Cheval and Hussars. I got my copy on eBay for about $15. It's a worthwhile investment.
