planning a diorama using Woodland Scenics static grass (light, medium, & dark green); should I mix some colors right off or put down a base color then lightly "salt" it with another to break the monotony? any suggestions welcome; thanks

I would mix the static grass in the jar, as it will be difficult putting down a second, and third separate layer over the first. Also a random distribution from a mixed jar will look more natural. Although, for patches of dead grass, I would do them separately.

I second Biggles' suggestion. Many moons ago, I tried "layering" different colors, and that's exactly what it looked like,, layered,, which is certainly not natural. And even with your various greens, you might mix a small amount of browns, or "dead" grass, cause unless your grass area is a manicured lawn of golf course, it won't all be a perfect green.

Concur.
This is W.S. static grass shaken on after random mixing of colors, but all the same lengths. Note the variations.

Too bad no one makes longer static grass for 1/35 scale. Or is there a size limit where static grass will actually work?

Did some checking and the longest now is 12mm. Not bad...at least it's longer than golf course grass.

ScenicExpress is a site that mainly caters to model Railroad groundwork folks, but they have staticgrass in 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 10mm, and 12mm. They also stock awesome groundwork bit and dirt, etc. One of my primary resources for groundwork material, other than Mother Nature!

Ditto. Most of their stuff is multi-scale, and will work for 1/35.
