I'm working on a model right now that doesn't want to hold paint. I've let the paint dry over night (about 6 hours). But when I pick up the pieces the paint sticks to my fingers. What should I do?

Sorry to hear that.
Is it plastic or resin?
Did you prime?
What paint type?
It looks like you might have to strip the paint and try again with different paints.
Mr Roo will probably be along soon with a wise and accurate answer.
Hope you sort it out.
Cheers for now
Peter

Is it plastic or resin? Plastic
Did you prime? No
What paint type? Revelle, never had a problem before
It's an Arii kit. I've never used this company before.

It looks weird cause even the worst quality of plastic will hold any kind of enamel paint or acrylic. So maybe the model is dirty (from molding, or finger grease or something else or you have a bad paint , or you didnt shake stir and mix your paint properly) i dont have another answer. Unpaint and redo priming this time

wash the parts in warm water with some wahsing detergent, rinse with luke-warm water and let dry

this will remove oil from the parts, the oil is used when the parts are injectionmoulded

Hi again Remf11m,
I had a terrible experience with an Arii model but not with paint. I did a...you guessed...a Luft 46 thing...possible replacement for Me Bf110 test...A Dinah with engines from the Ju88.
The area aft of the cockpit needed a lot of work and filler....I used Humbrol and the styrene melted. I had to cut out the squishy bits and scratch build the replacement area, almost half the fuselage. Needless to say I switched filler to Milliput for this one. Never had a problem before or since with Humbrol filler, but I've never done another Arii.
But Humbrol paints were fine.
???weird.
Cheers
Peter

It maybe the temperature, humidity and/or the paint consistency.

I think the paint stick because of the plastic itself. Remember when the kit is manufactured, it has a thin plastic film which prevents paints from sticking on the part and instead on the plastic. Try Sidney's technique to remove the film. Water + Soap + Oils = emulsion. They will stick together so the film will be washed away.

I've had this problem before.
There are 2 possible problems
1. The model may have grease on it
2. The paint you are using isnt mixed propely

for real problem models like this one I use the wash method and when Dry I wipe it over quickly with metholated spirts. Try the metholated spirits on a scrap first.

Metholated spirits is good as when it evaporates it leaves no residue.

Striping didn't go to well. Looks like I'm going to have to buy another model. Glad it only costs $6.75

just a word of warning to you all,

since my airbrush has been out of action for the past few months, ive been using the tamiya spraypaints, and they are rubbish!

they have trouble sticking to surfaces, even after priming, and washes with anything other that white spirit causes a wierd surface effect, like when water comes through behind the paint(like on old doorframes etc)

ive tried several different colours, and different temperatures, etc they all seem the same

cheers

joe
