Top one is a T-72, the bottom a T-55. Unsure what the center one is, perhaps our resident Russian armor specialist can identify it for certain.

the top one's a t-72, the bottom one's a t-55, but it has an odd lighting arangement, and the cut away in the.. err. brace on the front is on the opposite side to a usual t-55, the middle one looks like a t-55 or t-62.. looks like it was taken at the Imperial War Museum in England too

I think the middle one may be a T-55 with a BUNCH of reactive armor added. Only basing this on the 5 road wheels and the stowage on the front fenders.

The middle tank is missing the normal stutter 'spacing' between the two front road wheels normally found on T-55's

Hi,
Everyone got the T-72 correct, but I believe you need to relook the road wheel spacing and the bore evacuator location for the 2nd & 3rd vehicles. The large gap is at the rear in both pictures (hard to see in middle shot) and bore evacuator is 1/3 back from muzzle. These two ID clues denote the two vehicles as T-62s
The T-55 has the large roadwheel gap at the front and the bore evacuator is located at the muzzle. The T-54 does not carry a bore evacuator and has same road wheel configuation as the T-55.

Jeff-- totally agree. At first glance the middle one looks like a T-55 because of the muzzle cover. But, the bore evacuator is definitiely that of a T-62. Good eye.
Scouts out!

OK, the first one is definately a T-72. But I think the 2nd and 3rd are both T-62. The T-62 had spacings between the last road wheels, where the T-55 has the spacings between the first road wheels. I've got a shot up T-55 sitting in front of the hanger I'm working in as we speak. I'll try and get a pic of it and there's a T-72 on the other side of the base I'll try and get also. I certainly hope I stirred the pot on that one. Thanks for the pics.

TOP: T-72
MIDDLE: T-62 with reactive armor, This wa easy because of the shape of the turret
BOTTOM: T-62; Reasoning is that the T54/55 series the BORE EVACUATOR is located at the end of the barrel. While the T-62's is located 1/3 of the barrels length from the end of the barrel. Furthermore, if you examine the photo closer you will see that the gap between the 5 and 6 road wheel is greater than the gap between the 1 and 2 roadd wheel.
It can be real difficult to tell the differences between many of the FSU's armor. I know I taught Armor Identification in the US Army for over 10 years.
Actually the some T-54s can be found with the bore evacuator. The BIG DIFFERENCE between the T-54 and T-55 is the DOME VENTILATOR Dome located in the front center of the turrret and in line with the barrel!

I know I'm a little late on this but the top one is a T-72 and the middle and bottom tank are variants of the T62. The 54/55 had gaps between the number 1 & 2 roadwheels and the 62 had the gaps in the rear. The 54/55 had no bore evac or a bore evac at the muzzle end of the gun tube. Not sure of which variant on the 62's though.

Manchu34 - You are correct that a T54 can carry a bore evacuator, depending on model and the turret fan dome is also correct.
It has only been 28 years since I went thru Armor basic and 25 since I was a Scout Platoon Leader. I remember my scouts (11Ds then) going thru special vehicle ID training. They had to identify a vehicle by name based on a 3-5 second glimse of a slide - showing just a end of a gun tube sticking out of a tree line or a couple road wheels. hey had to know their stuff.
As 210CAV stated: "Scouts Out - Out Front"
