I bought a Meng Merkava 3D "early" kit. Would anyone happen know what the "early" means in terms of the 3D?

Mainly it refers to the Fire Control System. I strongly recommend the Desert Eagle book, it gives a good explanation and answer to your question and has excellent detail shots as well. The book can sometimes be pricey, so shop around. I grabbed one from Sprue Brothers.

Fire control system is the same in late and early Mk. 3D. All Mk.3D tanks have the BAZ FCS.
The main difference between early and late model of Merkava 3D is the new type of extra armour on the turret:
