This is my first post. First I'd like to thank everyone for all of the info I've obtained from this forum. You guys are the BEST!
Can anyone give me the dimensions for the phone box used on the shermans during WW2. I have looked through a lot of books, but can't figure out the dimensions from the photos I've seen. Any aftermarket companies that make the phone boxes would be appreciated also. I've searched this site and others for this info, but with no luck.
Thanks again, Shermaholic-in-the-making! :-)

I guess they were pretty much all the same ...I have seen somewhere that the first ones were put in ammunition boxes for .30 ...I have a spare from my Pershing that I'm doing if you want it just PM me and I send it to you ...My treat!! if it can help of coarse. I remember there was one in the old Verlinden sherman super detail kit too.

I'm with thebear on this one. According to Steve Zaloga in his book on Operation Cobra they used either .30 or .50 ammo boxes. Depending on the kit you have for the Sherman you may have some already.

By the way, welcome to Armorama, the very BEST modeling site on the web. Scroll down the forums page and you'll see Introductions. Introduce yourself over there and let everybody know who you are.

Welcome aboard Rblox.

I do not know the dimensions of the box, but I could post some scans of one mounted to the tank if that'll help. Looking at the pics, it should not be too difficult to "eyeball" the size.
BTW, the pics are of a more "standardized" box.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Kencelot, I have some pictures and had made a few of the "standardized" boxes from scratch, but they never seemed to look quite right. Just not scaled quite right. I might just try and use an ammo box like you guys mentioned. I've got plenty of those in my parts box. Any ideas how it was installed (opening on the right, from the top, etc.)?

Thanks for the help, Rick

By the way, I've posted a few (I took well over 100) pictures I took at the Virginia Museum of Military Vehicles open house in October '03. Hopefully this link works.

For what they are worth, these should at least answer a few of your questions.

some weeks ago Discovery channel had a documentary on WWII armor and said that they used either ammo boxes or scratchbuild metal ones that the welders of every unit could do on the crews demands from what ever there was available
