As title, I have some trouble to decide which color to use for the base coat and wash, could anyone kindly give me some advises? Thank you!

Hi Leung

I suppose it will depend on what type of vehicle you'll be painting. Open-topped AFVS like German half-tracks will generally have the same colour as the base coat for the exterior. I say "generally" because there are exceptions to every rule. MIG productions do some paint sets specifically designed for certain vehicles/nationalities. These sets include washes as well.

For me it depends on how much of the interior will be visible. If a figure will obscure most of the interior in any case, I generally just use a slight off-white colour, but as I said it will depend on the vehicle type to a certain extent.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dudley, thank you for the kind reply and for interior color I mean the white color usually seen from closed-top German WWII tank, does Vallejo provide an exact color for such purpose? Thank you!

They do in their Panzer Aces line but I don't recall the exact name of the color.

It wasn't white actually, but Elfenbein (ivory, so a creamy white). I recall from David Byrden's site that 1 part Humbrol 41 plus 4 parts Humbrol 74 is a good match.

As to a wash, whatever you feel works - there is no official guidance on this subject.

I guess it depends if you want to paint a well used AFV or want everything to look brand new. Shermans for instance seem to have a bright white interior however I have seen some that have a milky kind of white on the inside of the turret.

Hi,
German afv-s have the Elfenbein color RAL 1001 for the interior until late 1944(there is also an other interior color which is a very light green RAL 7009 I think, used until 1942, and red primer until the end of the war). You can spray an acrylic color and use an enamel wash on it, or have an enamel color with an acrylic was. If using acrylics such as Vallejo or AMMO/AK it is advisable to spray on an acrylic clearcoat, satin is best, before adding the enamel wash, I have experienced that pre-mixed washes might attack acrylics, having a very strong thinner component. I have good experiene with the AMMO/AK Elfenbein color, but basically you can mix a beige off-white yourself easily from any brand.

Thank you for all the kind advises, really appreciated. I will use the Interior white color from Gaianotes and Interior wash from AK interactive.
