After a stop of 15 years I recently rejoined the worldwide group of modellers.
I just started my 2e model (willy's jeep - Tamiya) and I am now building my first diorama ever!
DocDios website was a great inspiration for me, but ... I got me in a jam.
I have started to build up the diorama and am now ready to paint it, Here comes my question ... how schould I proceed?
Here you can find some picture I have taken
http://groups.msn.com/Roadkillsplace/takethehighwaytheysaid.msnw?albumlist=2
After these pic's where taken I have undercoated the whole scene using grey primer and then Black.
Schould I paint the rocks first or the road or the grass?
Could you give me some tips on how to paint te rocks?
Tnx a lot for the info

It looks like you've already fixed the grass...
Here is how I do :
- 1: create the soil and rocks : give things a shape
- 2: paint the darker spots, usualy dark brown
- 3: paint the "real" color of the ground and rocks, lighter shades of brown, grey...
- 4: drybrush
- 5: place vegetation
- 6: repaint vegetation, drybrush (I don't do it, but I should...)
The paints I use for all this are kids stuff, water paints... the cheapest I find !
And also a bit of what I've got at home : humbroll enamels, acrylics...
Does it help ?

Are they real rocks you used? If so, this must weigh a ton.
Why not just paint them more or less the same colour they are in the photos. Shades of grey. Maybe even some hints of sand/earth colour. For the road maybe more earth colour with greyish tones drybrushed. But to distinguih more between road and mountainuse loads of vegetation between the rocks. Static grass, brush bristles painted green for longer grass and small bushes. In one of the "how to" dios in Docs dios Keith explains how to make small bushes. Maybe some static grass should be used in the middle of the road to portray a barely used mountain lane. Maybe a rusty barbed wire fence at the side of the road.
Take a look at some hillsides near you, for suitable colouring.
Overall I think this looks great now, and should be only better when painted properly.
Hopefully this helps

Hi Sarge,
Yes they are real rocks, from a gravel road, but the whole dio only weighs about 2 Kg, sice the box is filled with self expanding insulation foam

Here's a work around suggestion if the case is that the base is all fixed.
I would mask off as much of the rocks & road as possible and airbrush the grass. Then I would mask off all but the road and airbrush that. Then I would come back in with a brush and paint the rocks.
Just a suggestion if its fixed. If not then I'd remove the rocks, do a based coat, then build up ground shading. Then mask off the road and do the grass. Air brush the rock separately and then assemble.
Hope this helps.
It's going to be a good looking diorama when its done however you end up painting it.
Good work.

Hi to all,
Slodder: the base is all fixed so I have to mask it all
I have put some extra foto's on the net after I primed the sucker.
http://groups.msn.com/Roadkillsplace/takethehighwaytheysaid.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=15
Eeeeeeh guys, tnx for the praise on the drivers but that is the picture of the box, damn I sure would like to paint them as nice as that.
Oh jeah, I am wondering in wich setting I build the dio, since the drivers wear duffelcoats I was thinking of putting a little snow on the dio (how?) or make it look wet and cold (how?) - Campain I had in mind somewhere in Italy
Any extra comments are welcome
Ronny

Ronny,
Eric

Snow - excallent!
I have yet to venture into the wild wild world of modeling wettness (I've got plans too). I have read where people use pretty much one of two things for snow.
1. Baking powder. Glue - Power/Glue powder until its built up as you wish.
2. Modelling snow. I think Scenic Land makes a product that doubles as snow.
This dio is getting better and better - can't wait to see it when you deem it done.

You can do Brush painting for most of the under-priming, but to get the best effect for the detail coloration of the rocks, you really should try to go with an Airbrush, or at LEAST spray cans (yuck!). Also, soak a stiff long "house painting brush" into some brownish green paint. Try to find a light fiber hair brush. This will "stain" the bristles, which can then be clipped off and used to make WEEDS to be glued between and around the rocks. Very realistic look!

Roadkill, regarding snow there are few things you can use to simulate it. I am not sure where you are located but if you are in the good'ol US of A then you can buy product called, yup you guessed it, SNOW manufactured by Woodland Scenics. You can get it from http://www.micromark.com and here is direct link to that product http://www.dxmarket.com/micromark/products/82357.html. I have also read about people using baking soda to make snow in 1:35 scale. With either of the two products you just spread some glue on the area where you want the snow to go and then just sprinkle the stuff. I hope this helps.
Cheers

Ronny,
Looks great! On the question of real rocks. Are the large cliff rocks real too or were you just saying the small road debris rocks were real. I think there was some confusion about that.
Make sure to send us some hi-res images when you finish. I would love to show it off on the site!
Cheers,
Jim

Hi to all,
Sorry for the late respons, but my little boy had to go to the Hospital on saterday (astma attack) and I am walking in an out of the hospitel since then, and have not got the chance to see my mail or posts :-(
Jim, all the grey you see in the pictures are real rocks (some are from bigger bolder wich I guve a good whak using a sledgehammer to get smaller pieces and therefore reduses the weight.
The road and smaller rocks are made from catlitter (the sand is ground up catlitter and then sifted thru a panty).
Jim, I can't believe you would like to put pic's on this site (I never builded a dio before), I am honord (damn, extra preschure do do it right, lol) I must be ready for august since I have put it up for my first competion ever (will be fun)
Army,
Like I stated before, I did not paint them yet, the picture is the box-art, I recently got them in the mail, and am now trying to modify them b'cause they don't fit well in the jeep, but it will
