I've moved away WWII armor and solely fixed on Cold War armor now. I served in Germany back in 1980 to 1983 and saw German M48 tanks and M113 APCs while at training sites or on maneuvers... At that time, I'm sure that they belonged to their reserve units since they had plenty of Leopards 1A4s and Leopards 2 tanks for their active duty units.

With Revell of Germany releasing several kits of West German Cold War armor over the past few years, I'm adding each kit to my collection... I know that they have a M113 kit, with the standard cupola with the M2 .50cal and U.S. markings, but I always wanted to build the German version with the MG1, 7.62mm MG mount.

I know that the German Army used M113s with the M2 .50cal MGs before, but I never seen any in Germany during my time there. I'm sure that this was the case during the 60s and 70s.

With this said, are there any conversion kits on the market in the U.S. or will I have to seek out something from Europe?

Thanks!!

Having built several of the RoCo Bundeswehr M113's back in the Cold War myself for my railroad layout, it strikes me that you may have a lot more to scavenge. German style lights, mirrors, smoke launchers, at a minimum. At least for that time period you don't have to worry about the Diehl track.

Hi Ted,
first you have to specify, which period or year you want to build. German M113 or MTW M113 as they are called here underwent a lot of modifications during their service life. Earliest tracks had only the M2 m.g. replaced by an MG 3, but later tracks had an special mount for the MG3, German head and taillights and smoke grenade launchers. Later models had more extensive modifications.
Tankograd publications does a 4 part series covering the German MTW.

Thanks for the replies!!!

I should have made it more clear.... I'm seeking to build a West German M113 from the time period between 1980 to 1983.

Another question, I remember that they were finished in the basic Bundwehr OD green and the only camouflage I've ever seen was mud being applied directly to the vehicles... Was that the norm?

Again, thanks!!!

Hi Ted,

nice photos of a M113A1G are on primeportal.net. Indeed this is a command vehicle, but if you forget about the brackets on the rear left and the box for the generator on top, you have all features for a "Germanized" M113.

Italeri kit M113 offers a German version - decals, MG3, smoke GL and some bits... It is a good starting point, and relatively affordable.

That's correct, but it is still the old M113/M113A1 US hull with no German features, except the SGL's.
On the (all in German) website www.panzer-modell.de you can find a building report for a German M113A1G (I can't place a Link for this)in "Bauberichte"/"Archiv" and then scroll down to "Bundeswehr-Kettenfahrzeuge"
