Between these two manufacturers, which is recommended? Who has more figs/accessories/options than the other? Which has a better fit and detail?

Tamiya's is better, but costs about 2-4x as much. Before Tamiya, Academy's M1046 was the best HMMWV kit in plastic. The Tamiya kit comes with their Modern US Accessories set, while Academy's has some seated figures and extras to build a M1025. I haven't built either of them, but if I were you, I'd go with the Academy kit (best value for money)

If you mean both Tamiya and Academy, don't do that! Tamiya kit is accurate dimmensionally, but Academy kit is not - it is too small. If you put them both on one diorama, the difference may be noticeable.
For me the only choice now is Tamiya, despite it's high price.
