Hello all,
I have a problem.. I used AMMO acrylic colors for my AMX Auf1. Apperantly the paint seem to disolve when I used white spirit for weathering. I also used the Vallejo Polyurethane Satin Varnish to protect the paint. But even then it looks like it "rubberize". Does anyone else got this problem? I even had problems with the primer from AMMO (white one). Could it be possible that's the problem?
For this model I accept the fact that this doesn't work.. But I would like to know what's going on here, so I can take into account next time.

Mineral Spirits over Polyurethane is a no no...it will dissolve it. Use a dif clear coat...use FUTURE floor wax if you can find something similar .
If your unsure, do some tests on spare plastic. Miniart buildings always leave you with good pieces to test on. Even any crappy spare parts you have.
Paint them the same same way you did your model in question. See if you can duplicate your problem. Then either replace the product or stop using the product that is failing.
To finish your model off you can switch over to Vallejo acrylic water based washes instead of oil based/mineral spirits.
The main thing to remember when using mineral spirits with oil or adding to enamel washes is too not use alot & do not let it sit too long on the model. Do small sections at a time. It will dissolve glue..sometimes even eat some plastics...
Test whatever matt coat you have on hand....you can even add pigment to water & use as a wash...or even acrylic paint with water.

Been having this problem for last few builds seems PROPER acrylic is too fragile for white spirit, if it pools then it needs wiping off ASAP this is a problem with washes and filters when you need so much w/spirit. Just to add fire to the mix this doesn't happen with tamiya acrylics but then they arent true acrylics!

I used tamiya for a long time now, and had never problems with it. I only got it with Ammo paints.

Aperrently I need another varnish, how is the quality of AK interactive's varnishes? Are these resistance to white spirit?

Hi Hilbert,
What kind of white spirit are you using? From my experience, some are too strong and attack the base so I only use modelling odorless turpentine or white spirit.

With an acrylic base of Vallejo, Ammo or AK I have never had any trouble applying washes without any protective varnish coat.

See if you can get AK or Ammo white spirit (or artist's products ifyou can not find them) and give it a try.

Hilbert,
You should not have issues using enamels over an acrylic base color. Is it at all possible that either the acrylic was not cured or that the surface was flooded with an enamel color or thinner?
If you are still having this issue and I can help in any way, please let me know.
Best Regards,
Iain Hamilton

I guess it was that I did not wash my model. The primer wasn't fun to do.. Have put several layers of primer.. but the white spirit I used disolve the primer.. or something....

Don't have any idea... so far because there are several aspect on which it go wrong..

Ok now that you mentioned that it dissolved straight through the primer, can you post a picture of what happened? And like Varanusk asked, what white spirit did you use? Is it a hobby/arts brand or a commercial/industrial brand?

Of all the enamel thinners I've used, tamiya X-20 was the most aggressive one but it could never damage the paint up to the primer.

Most of the parts that didn't hold on the paint are completely covered now with either paint or pigments. So photo's aren't useful anymore.

I think I have to get wash off al the models in the future.. Used vallejo primer and tamiya paints. Let it cure longer, and need a good coat of varnish.
