I guess it was bound to happen sometime.. maybe I'll start building WWII German again

"King Tiger, the King of Kings
In WWII, there’s a tank with thick armor and a long barrel. It’s a tank which made numerous battlefield legends and created many tank aces. It’s the king of WWII tanks, it’s the nightmare of Allied soldiers, and it’s the favorite of modellers. It is the German heavy tank Pz.Kpfw.VI Ausf.B (Sd.Kfz. 182.), the King Tiger!
MENG is working with The Tank Museum in Bovington, UK and the famous British modeller Mr. David Parker who is also the editor of Meng AFV Modeller and Meng AIR Modeller magazines to develop a brand new 1/35 scale German heavy tank King Tiger model kit. We will represent a most perfect King Tiger model kit with the numerous real vehicle measurements and pictures as well as the factory drawings and history photos.
As the King Tiger is one of the most popular subjects among military enthusiasts and modellers, MENG has chosen it as the first product of WWII subjects. Like other MENG products, this brand new King Tiger will be accurate in exteriors and details and also be enjoyable to build. What’s more, we look forward to perfecting this tank model with global modellers. If you have any suggestion or idea about the King Tiger model, please email us. Once your suggestion or idea is accepted, you will receive a MENG King Tiger model kit. We will also express our thanks to these modellers in the instruction manual. Let’s make a perfect King Tiger model kit together!

Great news indeed. It is good that they ask for ideas and suggestions.

And curious that they announce it as "the first product of WWII subjects", having already released the Minenraumer long ago!

Anyhow,if that means more are to come, double good news

Ahh, but you're forgetting TWO distinctly different other ICONIC WWII tanks: The US M4 through M4A3E8-series Medium Tanks, AND the Soviet T-34/76 through T-34/85-series Medium Tanks, both of which had a TREMENDOUS influence on the outcome of World War II. The Tiger II was a mere drop in the bucket as far as historical impact is concerned.

To quote a German WWII POW-Tanker, speaking to a US Interrogator: "ONE of our Tigers can kill TEN of your Shermans, but you always have ELEVEN..." Thus, German Tigers... The same can be said of the T-34. US and Russian Tankers learned that in order to overwhelm German armor, it was necessary to swarm around the German tanks, and kill them from the sides and to the rear.

US Tankers also learned that shooting a "Willy-Pete" (White Phosphorous) Round into a "shot-trap" such as found at the Turret Race, located between the Bottom of the Turret and the top of the Upper Hull, could and did kill any German tank. The FURIOUSLY BURNING white phosphorous would seep into the interior of the tank, igniting anything flammable inside, including Crew Members. If the Willy-Pete ignited fuel or ammo, the whole shebang cooked. End of story...

My Uncle Ludwig was a WWII German Tanker (Pz.Kpfw.IV- He was a Loader) and he related to me that the only things that his fellow German Tankers really feared were Allied Fighter Bombers and being hit with WHITE PHOSPHOROUS...

He also stated that the vaunted Tigers, both I and IIs were merely "expensive junk, entirely un-dependable"... Oh well...

I believe which they may be referring to subjects that received actual use in the conflict, which the Minenraumer was not.

In my opinion, this was a good business decision... there's a huge section of WWII German modelers that MENG has been missing out on.. This kit will definitely make them a lot of money which they can use to fund other projects and keep growing.. and that's good for the hobby as a whole

This is awesome. I wonder how long it could take for this to hit shelves. Seems they'll have R&D time and such. Could it be a year?

Well I'm partial to a king tiger build buy I'm scratching my wondering why since there's numerous excellent kits on the market that suit the beginner to advanced modellers.
I can see why they have gone this way so it should be a nice kit regardless.

Cheers Ben.

+1

That would be a nice distinguishing feature as I don't see that much space for improvement over the Dragon kit.

I predict we'll see more of the likes of Meng and Takom kitting very mainstream subjects. Although there are still gaps in the market, broadly we're getting to the stage where they either make increasingly niche subjects with lesser sales potential, or go for the subjects they know will always sell but have been kitted many times before.

This looks to me like Meng going all out for the centre ground. I'm not a panzer fan, but I'm happy so long as they keep churning out the modern stuff too (and WWI, why not?)

Not sure we need another KT. The Dragon kits are some of their better ones especially the Zimmerit versions.

I'll take as many as they offer. Dave Parker, from Meng AFV Modeller, is involved with the project; so, it should be something worth waiting for. Hey Dave, the cat needs guts.

I think this is a good move for Meng and I disagree it's redundant because DML has several. I suspect Meng will include metal barrel, PE and Indy tracks whereas Dragon reissues old kits sans goodies and replacing magic tracks with Mattel - sorry- DS rubber bands. It could open up Meng's revenue coffers so that they may also offer more esoteric items

PzH2000 is the only one I can think of. Maybe the new Chinese SPH, but I'm not sure.

AFV Club is really the only company you can consistently count on metal barrels.

From what I take from it, it seems like if a suggestion you submit is accepted, you can get an early or on-time release kit for free or at a reduced price...

Another German Tiger!?

With interior even!

Maybe Meng would have earned more points with a good AFV model from the UK. Here quite some gaps are still open.
Furthermore I have the impression that with the increase of time of the King Tiger being realy used and nowadays, its suggested capabilities and successes are becoming far from the WW2 reality.
Sure, it was an impressive tank. But overengineerd, slow and technically very unreliable, it forced its crew to abandon it on many occassions without even being hit to avoid becoming a victim of airplanes or Allied AT capacities. It just broke down!

But if people like it Meng should sell it. At the end of the day it is business for Meng. And from an Asian perspective this tank impresses. But for European and US modellers with some historical knowledge there must be more interesting subjects IMHO.

Enjoy a nice modelling weekend!
