I began building this horse barn lo these many moons ago. It was part of an epic build trying to show my home town in 1763. I finished three buildings and had this one about 80% finished then got into the resin biz and now here it is almost 20 years later. Time goes fast when you're old. But anyway....... I am not satisfied with the thatched roof. It sort of works for 1/35 and larger but in this scale is way too coarse. Any ideas? Suggestions?

No J , it looks perfect to me the space or gap between the several layers of straw is very realistic . It provides an efficient ventilation so the roof will not rot away in a wet environment or during rainy season. ( in real live)

Ok Jerry - all I can ask is, is there anything you haven't or can't build?!??!! The answer is NO!

I mostly/generally agree with Kurt the roof looks very good - the only thing I wonder - could you paint on a wash of sepia or brown colored India ink/alcohol to tone/mat it down? (I think you know this technique, usually with black to age bass wood) Sorry about the poor description - I don't know if it clearly explains what I'm suggesting...? Maybe though gets in a roundabout way to your root question of how to pull the appearance of the thatch roof together/settle the thatch "down"...?

It must have taken a lot of time and patience to make the whole building -

I think it looks pretty cool. Do you have something to scale it against, a ruler, coin, ect...you said brail Im interested in how braille.

Hi Jerry,

Well than! It looks great.
The only thing worth thinking about is the ridge of the roof. There are several (local) ways of covering it. In The Netherlands one used to use specially formed tiles, but in the UK and eastern Europe I saw special weaving techniques.
But it seems that you are starting a new scene again!?

@Nick-That is a great idea. I should tone it down a bit and will after I clean the dust off it. I built this about 20 years ago! It still has a ways to go till it's done.

@Dan-I will try to remember the scale ref when and if I do another update. This is HO scale though,if that helps?

@Paul-Thanks for checking in. This is an old one for sure but I may get it going again. The old drawing I have of this building is taken from a distance and I can't tell how the ridge of the roof is thatched. It is the same color as the rest of the roof so I am guessing it is a weave?
