There are two prominent squares on the front of the M1 turret, some times they are in a different color to the rest of the camo pattern. Are they detachable panels for IR and visual vehicle ID?
Last tank I worked on was the M60A2 & M551. Give you any ideas on the changes?

Yes, they are called CIPs (Combat Identification Panels). They show up as a reverse polarity square (cold spot) in optics to help ID friendly vehicles. There are usually louvered square panels on the turret sides and rear that do the same thing.

Just an fyi, the Voyager cip panels are killer. The corners fold in so it has a 3D surface.

How these panels are attached to the turret baskets on the two sides and the back? Are they welded or tied up with strings? Does anyone have pictures ? Thank you.

On flat surfaces such as the sides of Bradleys, they are held on with velcro.
