This is just a practice on an old KV-1 turret I had.

The colors are a bit darker in reality.. do you thik they are OK for NATO three tone? I used Tamiya's paints.

Also, would they pass for French three tone NATO scheme? I tried to get a "brighter" green, but I messed up the mix.

Of course, I need to pay more attention to the edges of the tack. I was just working quickly.. just had a couple of hours free

I'd say yes to the first, no to the second. Not only is the French green brighter than the NATO standard, the brown is noticeably yellower.

I think for NATO those colors are spot-on Hisham. But, as Sean mentioned, the French colors are different to the NATO ones. Personally if I was doing the French colors I might use the NATO brown and green as the base of colors and try mixing them with different shades of green and brown (and perhaps yellow as Sean mentioned about the tone of the brown French color).

Hisham,

Looks fine especially if you are going to weather it up.

Also for the NATO pattern you can try the Lifecolor set, also a pretty good match.

Obtw -I use Silly Putty to outline the pattern, pretty good for the curves and getting into the corners and hard to reach places.

Cheers

Thanks, guys.. I'm still trying out some mixes with the paints that I have around. There are no hobby shops here in Egypt.. and when I order some online, the minimum I have to wait is a month.. so I'm always trying to do with I got on hand.

Bret.. the problem is that I've had a really hard time trying to airbrush with "true" acrylic paints, like Lifecolor and Ammo and all those types of paint.. that's why I have to stick to Tamiya paints.. so I have to try getting a mix with Tamiya paints that is as close as I can get.

I agree that the Tamiya paints are perfect for NATO. I used them quite a bit when doing models for Lockheed Martin. However, I'd have to compare the green to "French" green side by side, although it does look off to me. The brown is definitely different than that which I used for my French 155, although I cannot remember what rand I used.

By the way, I can't get silly putty here. I tried ordering some through Amazon, but for some reason they don't ship to Egypt. I used something similar to bluetack by Faber-Castell.. it's kind of hard to work with, but that's all I could fine here, except for regular plasticine, but I think that would be too "oily" and would leave stains.

Yeah plasticine type products are indeed too oily- I tried some many years ago and it was nearly a disaster. I believe Ammo sell silly putty under the name 'Panzer Putty'. I use some brand called 'Science Putty' or something like that- its works nicely but it will rip off very delicate parts and PE quite easily and if left for long enough tends to droop off the sides of shapes and ruins whatever pattern you shaped it into.

Hi, Hisham! I suggest you log on to CYBERMODELER- this site has a special section for ANYTHING that you may want to paint. This particular section not only includes illustrations of camo patterns, but it also deals with "scale effect" AND LISTS the different paints with their respective paint numbers on very readable charts which are available from the various major model paint manufacturers...

GOOD LUCK!!!

Hello Hisham,

I have made some nice experiences with Panzer Putty and can definitely recommend it.

Not my best try yet but you can see that you can work both large areas as small corners aswell. Plus it is reusable and won`t tear apart your models.

Perhaps you can find this at Amazon?

Best regards

Dennis.. thanks for the suggestion.. I checked out the site and I found them suggesting Tamiya SF-26 (Deep Green), so I might order one and try it out.. but I won't be getting it before a month

German Dennis.. I'll try to look for the panzer putty. MIG Ammo sell some of that black putty on their site, but it's kind of expensive.

Question about Silly Putty.. I found a seller on e-bay who I think is willing to ship to Egypt.. so, how much putty does one "egg" have? Should I order several, or does one go a long way?

Thanks to all for your help

Hisham,

I have 2 eggs of silly putty-which is enough. For a modern tank you might need 2, for a WW2 or early Cold War tank 1 is probably enough. It depends on how thin you roll the "snakes" to lay out the pattern. The main challenge I have with the supply putty is getting the paint into the edges.

Cheers,
Bret

Hisham,

I don't know you from Adam but I appreciate all of your posts and the updates on new releases, etc. I'd be happy to send you three or four egg's worth of Silly Putty on my dime...let me know and if you're interest shoot me a message with your address.

Just my way of saying thanks and paying some things forward...

I'm not trying to sound like I bragging, but when I paint camo, I just over thin the paint a bit ,lower the air pressure and free hand it. I out line the pattern I want and fill it in. Now for the record, I have a damaged nervous system and my hands shake or move awkwardly. But I still try and it works out for me.
Also, it you look at a line of tanks, there are always small variations in the camo patterns so I try to stick with the patterns, but i do seat it if I'm off a bit
