Perhaps a strange topic, but the book on women in Nazi Germany mentioned some women were in customs agencies. I also remember reading that in Russia, one should avoid female customs agents. I was wondering how customs agents (of either gender) looked like.

I took a trip to the Soviet Union in 1987. I flew to Moscow, took a train to Leningrad, and then went to fly out of Leningrad. While at the airport customs agents discovered a blue beret and a tan boonie hat (Afghan style) I acquired while there. They confiscated them, saying "It is property of Soviet Union." Clearly upset, as I had paid the equivalent of about four whole dollars for both of them, I started to complain, claiming I had gotten them in a Berlin flea market. (I lived in Berlin at the time) I started to become the ugly American until a diminutive gal in an Aeroflot uniform showed up and asked what the problem was. After I explained, she locked up those two agents, upbraided them in Russian, and gave me back the headgear. Then she apologized for any misunderstanding! Clearly she was not an employee of Aeroflot.
And that's not even the funniest thing that happened that day.
By the way, since you asked, even though she was only about 4' 11', she was hot.
