I saw a few videos on Youtube of these people and kids making their own silly putty.. some with white glue and borax (whatever that is) or with liquid glue.. and some with shampoo and toothpaste.. or laundry detergent and glue.. Anyway, has anyone tried any of these mixtures? In the video they look like putty.. but I'm wondering if they actually work for our purposes as a masking putty? I mean, that would save me so much

Interesting ideas. Why not try what seems sensible? A penny saved is a penny earned! But don't cut up bits of styrene sprue and soak them in a jar of acetone. I tried that a few days ago, without success. The plastic never softened.

I would say all these recipes are for silly putty as a toy, therefore you can not be sure if may affect the paint or leave marks...
Better try first on a hidden area or scrap part, do all the subsequent weathering and see if it works fine.

I would venture to say that all of these putty recipes are too unstable to be trusted for model use. I wouldn't put these on my model.

That stuff is fantastic! Puts Silly Putty and Blu-Tac to shame. If you mask and paint you NEED it. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Hi Matt,

It's much easier to form than poster putty. It forms and stretches without breaking or tearing. It doesn't pull up parts. You can flatten it paper thin and cut it. You can pull it hard and snap it. You can pull it out hair thin (or thicker for tree branch patterns) and drizzle it over the tank. Depending on how you lay it down, it will do sharp edge or feathered. There's more that I can't think of right now. The stuff really has a lot of unique and fantastic qualities. It also stays new no matter how much you use it.

Can you re-use the MIG putty? Or is it ruined once painted?

You can re-use it. It stays new no matter how many times you use it.

I found another product by MXpression called Panzer Putty. My favorite online shopping place didn't have the Mig putty. Found a couple u-tube videos on it too. Looks like a worthwhile buy.
I usually mask with tape, paper, foto-frisket, and blue tack. All of those can lift paint if not done with enough caution. The temperatures and humidity here can make tape adhesive and blue tack really gummy. I've even had to put models in the fridge to make the masking tape less problematic.
Think I'll order this stuff today.

Panzer putty tends to slide on the model by warm weather. This means it's difficult to use it for a 3 or 4 colours scheme in summer, it should be removed after a couple of hours ...

Thank you for that. Now that I've ordered a tin, the info will come in handy.
