Hello evereone

This is my 1st post on this forum but have been following it since I got back into the hobby a few years ago after a long hiatus.

I was wondering is there any advantage to add and mix the clear coat satin or gloss right into the acrylic paint mainly Vallejo while applying the base coat while using the modulation method vs. painting then going over it with either a Vallejo clear or future clear coat?
I noticed when using future the clear coat is really nice but almost seem slippery and doesn't seem to take pin washes very well. With all manufacturers making their own clears to seal the model what makes Future stand out so much more then the others besides getting a long time supply of clear on the cheap?

General rule of thumb is that you can't make a flat finish gloss by an additive. You can make a gloss paint flat by mixing a matte base (looks like a paste).

I'm not sure what to make of Future since I've never tried it. But you need a gloss or satin finish to make pin washes run. So your term of "slippery" is a bit odd since that is what you're supposed to be aiming for. Could you describe this further?

Airplane guys have been using future for forever to coat their canopies. In that application it will fill in some minor perfections(scratches) but more importantly it really does make the clear parts more like glass in that you can see through them much better and clearer. The clear coat you use depends on what type of paint(s) you are going to use for your weathering process. If you are going to weather with oils or enamels then you want to use an acrylic type clear to protect the basecoat. If you are going to use acrylic or water based paints to weather then use an enamel or lacquer. In either case a clear coat is necessary before the application of any decals. This will give them a smooth surface to adhere to which will go a long way to reduce/eliminate silvering, which make the decal look more like it is actually painted on the model.

I rarely use future preferring either Testors clear gloss or Tamiya clear gloss both of which are acrylic based. If you use Tamiya clear gloss leave it dry at least 48hrs as for some reason despite being an acrylic paint it take quite a while for it to fully cure. Hope this helps. Good luck.
