I'm finishing of this 1941 example (85 number on turret)..
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/cyberhobby/chc6355.html
but at the moment I can't find the instructions (if somebody could post photos of these I'd be very grateful).
Now on the box art it shows the example I'm making with the oblong side fuel tanks (parts F8) attached, but on the instructions from what I can remember there's no mention of adding these. So my question is...... were these always carried on this particular example or are they optional? Or were these tanks never carried on this and should be left off altogether?

There are a handful of photos of 85 and a few other tanks in the same unit and though all have the little sheet metal hooks for the retainers none seem to show the fuel boxes fitted.
So, to be accurate you need the hooks but not necessarily the boxes.

Here is a link to an almost 2000 period photos of STZ T-34s:
http://photo.qip.ru/users/bj85/150677335/all/
Being produced in tough conditions when severe shortage of materials was aggravated by lack of qualified workers, those glorious tanks were almost immediately thrown into battle to be destroyed by the enemy or abandoned by their crews due to mechanical failures and empty fuel tanks. Almost never had they seen long service and scarce was the equipment attached to their hulls, but huge is our gratitude to all those people who designed the T-34, made its mass production possible and fought on them.

Thanks. I'll have a good look at that.

Yes I've seen 1 or 2 and that seems to be the case. I found one with what looks to be the 2 front mudguards smashed off also.

Pretty much Mark but as there doesn't appear to be any photos of all the fuel tanks attached I still wonder if that tank carried them all at one point like the box art. It would be good if it did as it will save me making the hooks.
One other thing too. There's three number 85 decals. I know 2 of them go on the turret but because I can't find the instructions I don't know where the 3rd one goes? I've tried looking for the instructions online but I can only find part of them so if you or anyone else can post them (or have any idea of where that 3rd decal goes) that'll be most appreciated.
I can't fimd my Dragon T34/85 Premium instructions either.

Hey David
You can take the instructions for your T-34/85 from here
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10051367
or from here, depending on your kit
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10053526
As for the numbers on your STZ vehicle, I suggest the third '85' either goes to the rear wall of the turret (which is very unlikely) or to the spares box...
The box-shaped fuel tanks were to be installed at the assembly line if they were available at the time when a particular batch of tanks was in production. 1942 was a year when tanks were needed for battle here and now, they didn't have to go too far to meet the enemy...Just my two cents...

Thanks Paul. Helpful stuff!
Only thing I can't make out is where decal no.3 goes on the turret of the Eastern Front 1944 version (first set of T34/85 instructions you posted). It's shaped like a little white ^ (arrow head) and there's 3 of them. I've tried enlarging the instructions but it's too blurry still.

Many thanks again Paul and I've been looking for photos of that actual tank but hadn't found any so great to have that. Maybe Dragon got mixed up with those arrow decals but thanks to the clearer instructions you posted I've put them on anyway. I can always paint over them if it turns out the tank didn't have them.

Should you wish to not limit yourself by kit-supplied decals, Archer have a couple of fine sets, as well as Star Decals and some others. And don't forget about the camouflaged Finnish tanks...they're something more than plain green.

I've just about finished my T34/85 and STZ now so I've fixed the markings from the provided decals but thanks anyway for those. Might come in handy for a future project.
One more question if you or anyone can answer. Those storage boxes on T34's.....do you know if they're made of metal or wood?
