I can't find any close up shots of this and would like to know what it is exactly. The part is a solid piece but do I need to drill out any holes?

If you mean the vertical cylinder in the center of your arrows, that is the air intake and filter assembly. It is a hollow drum that the air filter slides into. The air enters through the smaller cap on the side and goes through the filter and exits to the engine out the curved tube at the bottom. From the outside, it looks solid.
