Hi everyone I hope someone can help me out. I am working on the old Tamiya Pak35/36 and I am getting ready to paint it so I looked on line to look at reference images and this generated a question. The gun breach on the PAK 35/36 was it unpainted steel or painted? I am asking because I have seen it both ways on line. Thanks for any help you can provide.

If you look Here you'll see one that's been restored (I assume). The breech is certainly not painted. Great set of photos BTW.
Most of the war-time photos of this little Pak seem to have soldiers behind the gun firing it or they show it from the front. Those that don't have the troops by the breech are really hard to tell...
Steel vs. Panzer Gray in a B&W photo?
I'm currently building the Tamiya kit too....I will paint mine a darker steel.

Generally if it's on a carriage or opened top vehicle it would be the same colour as the main part of the paint scheme. ( except for any bearing sefise)
Other than that I beleave if it is internally mounted then it would be a gloss middle green from what I have seen on the exhibits at the bovington tank museum.

Now, on the same token, most of the kit artwork (that actually shows the breech) shows the breech outside is colored the main body color.
B&W photos really don't show.....
Six of one, half-dozen of the other?

The exterior, non-moving portions of the breach are painted Dunkelgrau. All moving parts or surfaces that moving parts slide against are bright shiny steel.
