I'd like to build an Afghan War or Russian based BMD-2 using the new Panda kit, but I've seen very little in terms of Soviet era machines.

Can anybody recommend some sources?

I think Bison used to have decals for one BMD-2 in Afghanistan.I have seen only one photo of one in Kabul right after the invasion and it was in a overall dark green.

Only seen the BMD 1 there, if you have a pic, would love to see it.

I've got a few BMD-2 pics from Afghanistan, can't seem to find them right now. IIRC they were primarily there for testing and were never seen in large numbers. If you have Facebook, there is a good BMP and BMD research group I would recommend joining.
