Ave, it sure looks like a M-36 to me. It anyones guess why it or the other former US Vehicles (Chaffee, Sherman) are there. I would find the story interesting.

There was a few of them found here. One of the armored units out of Ft. Hood Texas found one at an Iraqi Armor Officers School. The US mechanics turned some wrenches and now the thing runs. The are taking it back to Ft. Hood and putting it in a museum there. The Sherman was in remarkable condition as well.

After WWII, US vehicles were sold all over the world. I saw a couple of shermans on display in Iraqi towns in parks and such when I was there durng the war. Also saw many more modern vehicles in Iraqi colors. Saw a couple of M-800 series 5-ton trucks, M901 TOW vehicles, and M113s. Remember, we supported Iraq in the Iran-Iraq war. Iraq was a US ally till they invaded Kuwait in 1990. We sold them many weapons and vehicles. There is also evidence we sold them two M1 Abrams tanks that they added T-72 opticas and fire control systems to and called Lions of Babylon. There was a fear we would face them in Desert Storm, but they were later found in disrepair in Iraq.

Since I have been in Iraq I have found many foreign tanks, AFV, etc.
The M36TD, M24 Chaffee, Sherman Recovery Vehicle, V300 Cadillac Cage, M48 Tank, M113 APC variants.
Alot of Captured Kuwait equipment, British tanks, French APCs
I hope to scan the article about the Sherman tnak that the unit has repaired.
Enjoy
