One of the those sets of brackets on the front is for the boom to lift the generator.
I cheated and looked in the TM. Those metal things are stowage plates. We never used them either.
And we had the ballast plate rack on the top left rear but it was used to hold MOGAS and water. I would never want to swim a 577.

I agree about the generator boom, but I seem to recall the antenna bracket or was it a dual purpose item? What does the TM say?
thanks

James-- love your work, very detailed and very nicely painted. May I recommend that you drill a hole in the top and bottom of the bracket located near the generator on the right side of the M-577? It is the antenna mounting bracket and will hold the sections of the 292 antenna (they probably have another type now). Hopefully, Gino will pipe in and provide the current correct nomenclature--arty guys live in those tracks..well done!
DJ
Thanks, DJ. When I make my Vietnam version I will make sure I do that. This one was just a quick build for figuring out the layout of where some macro artifacts are going to be positioned in a new building.
Cheers,
James

James - Johnson, that is...
I know what you are talking about IRT the framework and bars just below the TC's hatch. I could have sworn that those items were counterweights for swimming due to the height of the 577 and the nose heavy attitude with the engine and the 5Kw generator. I remember asking some maintenance folks the question 20-25 years ago and I think that that was the answer...
Jimmy Chuck,
Again, that is a great quickie build for Gordon... Keep up the vehicle modeling. you need to do an 11th ACR ACAV & M48 one of these days.
John
Thanks, John. I intend to do more vehicles. I still need to finish that 2/47th Infantry track and then I may do some 11th ACR stuff. My Sunday School teacher from when I was in High School was with 11th ACR in Vietnam in 1967 and again in 1970, so I may build one of his vehicles.
Cheers,
James

Bruce,
Awesome paint on the 577! Yeah, I've got a soft spot for the earlier camo schemes as many of the local National Guard (50th AD country!) units where I grew up were in MERDC schemes (still haven't tried one yet, but it's coming!). I did do a slick M60 in MASSTER last year:

Georg

You are correct.
"Two antenna mast mounting brackets behind the driver's hatch are used to mount the portable antenna RC-292."

Spent a few years in and around a 577 while working Brigade and Division S2. Don't ever recall seeing those mounting brackets.
To the OP. Cool model, brings back memories. All my years in Service, MERDC was the camo pattern. Helped paint a few softskins and AFV's.

How did you swing the generator out of the cradle or mount the 292 poles?

The boom mounted flat on the roof went into the brackets on the curb side and was used for the generator. The brackets on the drivers side were for the 292, if it wasn't ground mounted.

Same for me. I ran the FDC for a DS M109A1 Battery in Germany out of an M577A1 and the brackets on the right vehicle side of the generator were where we mounted the boom when we ground mounted the 4.2 KW Generator, and the smaller brackets behind the driver's hatch were used when we track-mounted the RC-292. Doing so was always a trade-off as it was much faster to set up and take down mounting in the brackets and not having to run the guy wires. However if we were to have been in a hide location for some time, doctrine said place it quite a bit a way from the track so as not to provide an accurate fix if someone was using RDF.

That is fantastic. My old Squadron book on the M1 Abrams has an old 105mm M1 from Fort Hood with a similar pattern and color scheme, from 2AD July 83.

Just a bit more info, the springy looking thingy flopped over the boom on top of the Tamiya 577 represents the block and tackle for the boom to handle the generator.

Honestly I don't remember how the squad members performed those tasks. That was 30+ years ago. I just loaded two dirt bikes in the back and then drove the LTC in a CUCV until we got to the TOC area.
