I assume there was insufficient room inside the BMP for the required fuel, so they opted to build tanks into the rear doors.

In many ways, a pretty elegant solution (unless you are a grunt riding into combat in a BMP).

The rear of the vehicle is not ment to face the enemy. Thats my guess, Russian pride never retreat.

The rear door tanks are almost always empty when the BMP goes into combat as they are only meant to increase the road travel range of the vehicle. In intense war areas where the BMP sees action often and it is relatively near to its base of operations, instructions highly recommend detaching the rear door tanks from the fuel system, filling them with sand as additional protection of the troop compartment and adding fuel to the internal main fuel tank from other sources when the need arises.

I would say so...however it's basically the same answer as John's first reply (to increase range) which you said was wrong. So is it...?

Actual, from the design notes, is the fuel tanks in the back doors are to increase travel range of the BMP. They are meant to be empty when going into battle.

It has been recommended, on local orders, to detach them from the fuel system and fill them with sand when close to a operating base and range is not as important. However, this does ruin the tanks for fuel purposes until they are cleaned out (and cleaning out diesel tainted sand from those things...no thanks.)

All of this is noted above.

Now the joke is...to hold all the vodka.
