How did German motorcyclists actually dress when driving a motorcycle? What did they wear/carry etc.?

Despatch riders had a rubberized greatcoat. I believe it was made so that it could be closed around the individual legs to act as further protection from wind and wet. Also, it was common to wear the gasmask cannister diagonally across the chest/belly for comfort reasons.
One picture I remember from a book years back has the rider with helmet and greatcoat in the Russian mud. To protect his face from flying mud he is wearing his gas mask without it's filter.
....still wish I had that book!
