I've seen phone " call boxes " mounted on the rear of some contemporary tanks for infantry to talk to the crew , but were these used in the Wehrmacht ?
Or Allied tanks ?

Thanks

There is no mention in the few books that I have .

Can you suggest a search term for an image or text ?

Thank you , Frenchy

I have been punching in various search terms for a Wehrmacht application to no avail.
It's really curious to me since they were pioneers in the tank-to-tank radio command and control.

They're mentioned in a few of the books I've read. "Rolling Thunder Against the Rising Sun" discusses them, although it lacks photos. In terms of wartime examples it's mostly improvised units as far as I can tell, basically linking in a regular handset into the tank's intercom system with varying degrees of complexity. Seems like the common method involved leaving the phone in an extra ammo can welded to the rear of the tank though. Not sure about the wiring arrangement.

Allied tanks didn't get the infantry telephone until 1943-1944. By this time German economic and industry was in no shape to try to address widespread, long standing, but non-fatal problems, and were staking mostly on more silver bullet style solutions.

I've never heard of such a thing on a German tank.

But,, but,,, if the Wermacht armor & infantry had used a "callbox" system,, we would have likely missed out on all those pointing Germans in various figure sets throughout history.

American tankers would sometimes improvise a system using a field telephone handset wired into the intercom system and hung in an ammo box but there was nothing standardized until 1945 and it's not certain that it actually saw service. I don't recall seeing anything on British or Russian tanks, or German, Italian, or Japanese vehicles either.

As far as Italian tanks are concerned no intercom whatsoever.
Ther was no radio inside the tanks either (at least for the first years of war and after that not in all tanks)

ciao
