I've been googling this for a few weeks now and can't seem to find any info. Did the German tank crews ever use helmets? Seems odd if if they didn't. Every other country seems to have some sort of protective head gear for armoured vehicle crews but the Germans.

The Schutzmutze was worn during the early war years (1939-40)
After that just soft headgear and headphones.

I have seen a few pics from the war in which the tank commanders were wearing steel helmets. These were probably areas where there was a lot of enemy sniper activity reported. The Russians especially liked to target the tank cmdrs. Helmets were rare though. There are a lot more pics with Stug cmdrs wearing them as the Stug was meant for close Infantry support.
