Did the Brits take sandbags with them & fill them up to set up defenses at the bridges during Market Garden?

If they did, where did they get the sand from?

No sandbags. Sandbags are a figment of Hollywood imagination in most movies as they are not used that much. So many modelers get the opinion that you need sandbags to show a defensive position. Just figure the odds man. If everything you carry into a battle is on your back and you are not expecting resupply for a day or maybe more, why would you waste space in your rucksack with sandbags?

+1 to what Jerry said, you dig a hole, in an urban environment you use what's available (furniture, mattresses, etc.). You want to save weight/space for beans, bullets and band-aids especially if resupply is iffy.

You are all correct about the sandbag issue but they look cool... LOL! Artistic license and all that...

Then again,if you are REALLY attached to sandbags and just have to use them, try building a dio about Vietnam and a USArmy firebase. There would be sandbags out the wazoo.

Maybe the British parachuted down a couple of pallets of pre-filled, ready-use sandbags. Which the troops had to schlepp several kilometers to the bridge!
