Hi everyone,

I could use a little help on the German 81mm mortar also known as the Granatwerfer 34, 8cm. I am scaling up a larger version of this piece and for the life of me I cannot find either of my two 1/35 scale examples. Could someone please give me the following measurements on the mortar's bipod?

Measurements needed:

Length of cross bar where legs and elevation screw attach.
Length of legs.
Distance between legs. (I know it is variable, just want to duplicate the 1/35 scale version we all know.)
Length of elevation screw as it extends beyond cross bar top.
Length of the elevation screw "tube" that extends below the cross bar.

I've got the mortar's base and tube covered but seem to have lost track of my 1/35 mortar bipods. (With a gazillion pieces of plastic floating about who could have seen that coming?) Anyway I'd appreciate it if anyone could get me some really accurate measurements from a 1/35 scale mortar to help me with scaling.

thanks in advance,
Jim

Hi James,

How much do you plan to scale up? If it's 1/6 then there's a Dragon kit for that. Saves you time and effort in scratching one. Just a suggestion you may want to consider.

Cheers,

Tat

Hi Tat,

Thanks for the info but I am rescaling to 1/24 scale. Just need the measurements so I can finish getting this piece ready to cast. I can scale from any known scale so if anyone has a 1/6 or 1/35 piece I can use those measurements.

thanks,
Jim

Hi James,

You've now reminded me of a build that I have yet to finish

The bits and pieces still need to get themselves together, but I think I have the sub-assemblies that may help answer your question. What I have is the DML kit in 1/6 scale:

Crappy pics though. Hope these help.

Cheers,

Tat

Are you interested in the ammunition?

I might have some dimensioned contemporary drawings somewhere.

Personally I'm wary of scaling up from model parts because you tend to end up magnifying over scale parts and simplifications but it's your project. Did some Doyle drawings appear in one of the Panzer Tracts books on the 250 or 251? That might be a better starting point as it will be based on a full size example.

Yes, Panzer Tracts 15-3 has plan and side elevation views of the mortar and also the bipod and baseplate, all to 1/35 scale.
