Hello to all.

I am currently making Trumpeter #00204 SA-2 Guideline missile on transport trailer, which, released in 2003, is still an outstanding kit today. I am also using Voyager Model #PE35012 upgrade set and Miniarm #B35112 ZiL-157 resin wheels. I am going to make it for Arab-Israeli wars.

As this link says, http://pakdef.org/almaz-s-75-family-of-sa-2-guideline-low-to-high-altitude-surface-to-air-missile-systems/:

Egypt began receiving the V-750 at the same time as the Indians and had 18 battalions in service by the time the June 1967 war with Israel started. According to US Corona satellite reconnaissance assets, Egypt had 35 known SAM sites and six known SAM support facilities available for use. These fired only 22 missiles destroying two Mirage IIICJ fighters (on 7 and 8 June respectively) and ONE COMPLETE BATTALION INCLUDING RADARS WAS CAPTURED BY THE ISRAEL DEFENCE FORCE with another eight battalions destroyed by the Israeli Air Force.

I am thinking on making this SA-2 captured by Israel. I consider it to be an interesting prototype: Soviet-made, supplied to Egypt, operated by the Soviets and captured by Israel.

The only reference on this vehicle I could find is this video taken at Israel Defense Force History Museum Tel Aviv: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mJVmUZg38I

Unfortunately, any further info on this prototype is very hard to find.

If a whole SA-2 battalion was captured, one can suppose there were much more vehicles and launch stations there. Did they wear different camo? Were some of them repainted in IDF color?

Any info, including pics, description etc. of these or maybe similar vehicles would be greatly appreciated.

big problem for trumpy SA-2 is that there's no decal for the missile.

Great! Thanks Frenchy!

An interesting issue is the Egyptian license plate on the left trailer on pic 1. Trumpeter kit does not offer a decal for it. So I assume the trucks (if just captured) should have license plates as well. And this left trailer has ZiL-130 wheels on it, as opposed to Trumpeter kit which offers rims as on the right trailer.

On the 1 and 2 pics, the truck & trailer seem to be Russian green, and the missiles are camoed, so they are in original Egyptian colors. Interesting: original Russian lettering on the missile is not painted over with camo.

On the 3 pic, there is lettering in Hebrew on the missile stabilizer fin. What does it say? Is it a proper writing to copy on model?

On 5 pic, I’m not sure, is the trailer repainted in IDF color? (The trailer appears to be the same tone as the IDF truck next to it.) So I suggest pic 5 was taken later?

Not exactly what you're looking for, but here are some Diamond T trucks used to tow captured SA-2 launcher trailers (1967) :

Full size

More pics showing captured equipment :

1967 (or 1973 ? The white band on the M35 truck hood in the background looks to be the same as the one visible in the last picture below... ) :

AFAIK, the green square on the ZiL door is an Egyptian Army marking...

1973 :

Great pics!

So, summarizing, the colors were:
Truck & trailer – overall Russian green OR overall light sand, OR light sand with brown or Russian green camo patches;
Missile – overall light gray OR light sand with Russian green or brown camo patches.

Important: were the camo patch borders always diffused from spray-paint? I searched for SA-2 models online and all modelers tend to make diffused camo borders with airbrush. But is that always right? On some of these prototype pics, it seems that the color borders are sharp enough?

I ain’t got an airbrush, so I use usual brush and my camo borders are always sharp. So should I try sharp camo or not try camo at all, just overall plain color? I would prefer camo, if possible.

I guess light grey/bare metal should be OK for an Egyptian SA-2 captured in 1967 :

some had camo though...

Later pics like this one taken in 1985 show SA-2 missiles with no camo...

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Egyptian_S-75_SAM_on_truck.JPEG

You can notice there's still a square painted on the truck door

Did you see this webpage ?

Sorry I can't help you with the camo/no camo choice

Yes, I’ve seen this link. These pics are great!

Here are links showing plenty of IDF-captured Egyptian and Syrian vehicles. BTW, sharp edged camo is clearly visible.

And here are Egypt license plates for 1930-2016. I’m gonna use them, too.

And the SA-2 were never bare metal. Russian museums display silver painted ones, but I am sure these have inert warheads. The combat missiles were factory painted gray (export for Egypt) or gray/white (East Block, Iraq), and sometimes camoed over on site (some, but not all in Vietnam and Egypt).

Michael, I saw your thread and it has peaked my interest in this subject as well. I'm a huge fan of Israeli Military and have several kits and decals dedicated toward future builds. I didn't know anything about captured SA-2 SAM battery, but now I do. Also, great bit of links you and H.P. shared. The will come very handy.

Currently, I'm working on a 1/32 Mig-23MLD with Syrian/Israeli markings. I know, it's not an armor, but it's Israeli military equipment. Also, I have couple off old IDF book that has many black/white photos of Israeli War. So, I'll have a look and see if there are or there is any photo relates to the missile transporter and share it over here. Once you are set with your building material I hope you will build your transporter here so I can follow along.

Michael,

it would be great if you post those pics. As I see it, they probably are unique. I have started a new thread for my model and posted some particular prototypes I’m using (including pics I made myself) with my comments
http://armorama.com/forums/249742&page=1

I will post some further discussion on the prototypes related particularly to my model there. I have also found a couple of interesting mistakes in the Trumpeter kit, and will show them with further prototype reference.

By now, I have almost finished the missile, which is built and camoed, and fully assembled the trailer which is waiting for hairspray (with Ammo).
