Hi there
I need help please. (I am a newbie).

I was given a 1/32 Revell Spitfire that I want to use in a diorama. BUT THIS THING IS HUGE!!!

Can anyone please give me some advice, pointers, references, anything, that will help me figure out how to make a smaller (A4 size page) diorama. My idea was to have a crashed plane, with some German soldiers checking it out. But it's HUGE. maybe if there is a way of simulating broken wings... ? I don't know.. and have not been able to find suitable photos of plane crashes to show how to go about this.

PLEASE HELP!!??

thanks'

Have you considered chopping it up to make several wedgies?

They used to be shipped in crates.

Richard,
Aircraft shot down over Europe were recycled into other aircraft. They were cut up, and loaded onto trucks and trains and hauled to be broken down into base metals.

you could put your damaged and disassembled Spitfire on a railway flatbed.

In water ditched, on beaches where the sand covers the wings or wreck recovery, see links above

Great idea thanks! Water will be a challenge for me though (remember I am new)
Any ideas how wings look when they've been broken off?

You can think out of the box too, if it has an engine in it, you could build it minus the engine but with the cowls and prop on and then use the engine for another model, this is what I did with the engine out of a 1/24 scale hurricane kit

So I got two models for the price of one

well you could cut them off to fit then use plaster coloured with yellow to make the sand. that way you wouldn't see the break, waster is something you can buy that you pour in and it sets Vallejo still water is what i used.

For the base I use photo frames, they are dirt cheap at places like home bargains, use some polystyrene to fill it and place the model, then plaster or similar over that ( Colour it )

If you want grass you can get that on ebay, there is various types, such as greengrocers use.

Nah. No engine. I am starting to like the sand idea. Maybe in the desert...... I'll have to check on the uniforms used by the Germans in the desert. The figures I have all wear normal Heer uniforms.
I really am a bit scared of a beach scene.......
One can use resin for water too. but the beach will have a slope.... different to just making a canal.
Thanks for the dialog. It helps me think.....
I had been hoping to depict a Spit crashed in a field. with grass and rocks and shrubs.

True, but you did say "anything, that will help me figure out how to make a smaller diorama"

just thinking outside the box.

Google search 'crated spitfire', will get you a number of crashed spitfires and maybe something a little different.

Sent you a PM.

Thanks Ryan. I should have started by stating what i had in mind, I suppose. ;-)
But nevermind, your idea is not lost - it is now stored in the recesses of my mind. Where many other ideas reside.

You could model the Spit as it came down and slid across a field and was brought to a stop in between two medium size concrete pylons for a fence, etc. Both wings have broken off and bent back along the fuselage. This will cut way down on the size?

Yeah. Thanks. I like that and was thinking along those lines. Any idea where I can get references from to see what it would look like at the point where the wings broke off?

It depends where you intend to remove the wings from, I am taking it you intend to do it at the wing root?

Ok a couple I took at work, this is a MK 14 minus the wings

this is the end rib in the wings

and this is the front spar attachment on a MK 19

hope they help.

I bought one a Hasegawa one about 12 years ago with the same thing in mind. It's the Spitfire Vc which is a really nice kit. I borrowed a fantastic book off a mate of mine who builds wingy things so that I could get the cockpit details right as the canopy was going to be open with it being crashlanded. You're right about them being sizeable but I didn't think it was too bad. What was the problem was accomodating other things like infantry taking the pilot prisoner and walking him out of the field to a vehicle as it couldn't be too close considering he'd want plenty of room to belly land. In the end I gave up so I now have a half built Spitfire waiting for inspiration to finish it for a dio. I have seen a dio on the net (can't remember where) of a Spit at a 45 degree angle having crashed into a house so it doesn't take up too much room being on a vertical angle. Looked really good as well. Maybe that's an option?

A wedgie is a "wedge"/piece of the model. For example, it could be forward engine/part of wing with ground crew for one wedgie then cockpit/wing with pilot for second wedgie and crashed tail section as the third. so its one model, three dios. Hope this makes sense.
