Hello everyone,

This is my first build log here in the Russo-Soviet forum. I'd like to share my build log of the Trumpeter 1/72 BTR-80. This is my contribution to the current Trumpeter Campaign.


The model itself was an easy build. In my point of view, the details look very crisp, there two things that I found dissapointing:
1) The rubber wheels. This is the first time I have built one supplied with these. I'm not sure how good the paint will stick to it even after priming. I guess I will see.
2) The installation points for the head lights. Trumpeter tried its best to keep the angles correct but once the headlights are installed there are a whole lot of filling/patching and sanding to be done. I'll have to verify after priming if I covered them sufficiently.

Since I do not have any publications to use as a reference for this build, I searched this forum and found that there was a build thread in 2009 for this same kit.

I went through the thread and found some useful tips and links. Thanks to that thread, I saw a great reference on where to install grab handles. So, here are the results of my attempt.









I will try to install some side mirrors and correct a couple more details and I will be priming this soon.

I have completed the build phase of this kit. Here are my progress shots.

Here is the view of the rear where you can see all the brass parts I have added.


The following next shots will show the side mirrors, hooks for the tow cables, antenna and grab handles.




And finally, a couple of overall shots.



My next steps are: wash, prime, paint and weather.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the comments. I have finally sprayed both primer and camouflage on the BTR. All the work that I did is now barely visible.

Please note that this is my first time to spray camo using an airbrush. I did this freehand, using Rick Lawler's article as a guide. I have to admit that it does not look clean. I'm hoping at least to make it look like it is the right scale. I have since tidied up some of the over spray since the photos were taken.

Hello,

Here is the latest update. I have experimented with oil dot fading technique. I like how the over spray was toned down and how the matt black paint was also subdued. I have also used some washes and pigments on the wheels. Here are some more WIP pictures.

BTR-80 is done! After applying some more oils, then washes and pigment, I've completed the weatherin stage. I just hope it does not look over the top. Here are the shots:
