Hello everyone,

I bought a couple of days ago the Tamiya T-72M1.
I would like to enhance the kit with the full engine compartment from Verlinden :

https://www.verlindenonline.com/1-35-scale-t-72-engine-compartment-2719.html

Besides, I have sighted Verlinden has released the upper hull for this kit. So I would like to know if some of you bought this upgrade? If yes, could you please tell me if it comes in a single piece (engine compartment hatches already on place and not removable) or if the cover engine hatches come separetly in the kit (I sent request to Verlinden, but never had any replies)?

https://www.verlindenonline.com/1-35-t-72-full-new-upper-hull-set-i-2333.html

Besides, by looking information, I read on this forum the model base used by Tamiya is a chimera polish built one of the NVA. So, in order to make an accurate full T72M/M1, I would like to know if the SBS early T-72M and SBS T72M1/A are fully usable to do so?

About the barrel on the Tamiya kit. I do not know if they reproduce the thermal skin. So had the T-72M/M1 a thermal skin on the barrel?

Next step the tracks. I far away prefer spare part tracks. If I have well understood, the right tracks for this version are omsh/rmsh style tracks? Which kit do you recomend me?

Now the AA MG. I read somewhere the AA MG used on the export version of the T-72 is not the NSVT but the old DSHK. So do you know whick model of the DSHK I could use?

Many thank's for your comments/replies
Cheers,
Philippe.

Bonjour,

The Tamiya T-72 can be updated nicely, but you have to be careful with what you use.

The first, far most important question is...what T-72 do you want to build? Cold War in East Germany? Iraqi ODS? Iraqi Modern? Chechnya? What you want will determine a lot of the answer.

Second, the Verlinden upper hull conversion (kit 2333) is ok. It does NOT have a open engine hatch and would need a bit of work to get it done. The much OLDER Verlinden engine compartment (kit 781) would work better with the Tamiya engine deck in plastic, but the front hull upper glacis would still represent only a M1 hull with the applique armor. This is why WHAT you want to model is important.

If you just want a correct T-72M1, buy a SMS or Miniarm T-72A turret and you are pretty much good to go, barrel and all. The Tamiya barrel is ok, but can use enough detailing to make getting a aftermarket barrel a good option. SBS T-72 turrets do NOT come with barrels, Miniarm ones do BUT...the miniarm T-72A turrets are currently OOP so it may be hard to find one. Fun fun.

I prefer Trumpeters T-72 working track kit 02050 NOT, I repeat NOT, kit 06623 (nonworking). Others like Fruils metal tracks, Master Club metal tracks, Master Club clickable RESIN tracks, Spade Ace metal tracks, or MENG's track sets.

T-72's were ONLY ever sold with NSVT AAMG's. They may have had DsHK's retro-fitted by some local group later, but they would be specific to a picture...not normal SOP.

Hi;

I Second pretty much what JD has suggested, the Major part would be A correct Turret. SBS should be simple to source in your area, Miniarm as JD stated mite be hard to find, as for A Barrel there are quite A few AM companies you could use also. As stated, if you are trying to depict A Specific vehicle then you are limited by what details that you are able to source. The one Factor you have to ask yourself, is how much Time & Money that you are willing to Incure, the project can be really Expensive if your not careful. If you are not building A specific vehicle, then you are only limited by how much you are willing to depict in your Subject.

GOOD LUCK; MIKE.

Good afternoon,

Thank to both of you. Yes, my mistake, I totaly forgot to tell you which version I am planning to build.

An Iraqi T-72M/M1 (Russian/Soviet made and not an Assad Babil downgraded monkey tank), during the Koweit invasion and before the change of their national flag.

I would prefer the complete Verlinden engine/cooling/transmission i/o the half motor (I have it for the Tamiya T-62, we will talk about it in an other post) and leave the hatches opened.

This reminds me something, I have never found any pictures of an opened hatches motor plates, so I am not sure how do it.

I received on previous week-end some Osprey Publing books, and especially the one about the T-72 I am reading. Besides, I am waiting for the receiving of the Abrams Squad, Modelling the Gulf War 1991.

From the Osprey book and the internet, it appears there are many turrets configurations or versions (?) used by the iraqi Army, (but I did not notice to look deeper in detail on hull version/configuration, I was mostly focused on the details of the turrets and the barrel gun).

The time for me has totaly no importance, I am very patient, and it can take a lots of time from the first cut to the last painting detail

So I am collecting a lots of information and advises to continue and making my budget for each kit.

If you want a base model T-72M, use the Verlinden upper hull and the Tamiya turret (Verlinden basically just cloned the Tamiya part in resin, but eliminated the applique armor on the glacis). If you want a T-72M1, use the Tamiya hull with the Miniarm or SMS T-72A/T-72M1 turret.
Incidentally, the T-72M and T-72M1 versions were export models produced in Poland and Czechoslovakia.

ok thank you.
So, for turret it's clear.

And no thermal skin on the barrel?

Now I have other questions about the fuel lines (pipes ?).

Unfortunately, in the Osprey book, nothing is written about this subject.

This movie (a T-72M?) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krp2y88nNCo

An the following pictures (T-72M1?) :
http://svsm.org/gallery/T-72-patton/IMG_0580
http://svsm.org/gallery/T-72-patton/IMG_0577
http://svsm.org/gallery/T-72-patton/IMG_0578
http://svsm.org/gallery/T-72-patton/IMG_0579
http://svsm.org/gallery/T-72-patton/IMG_0581

A line is running from the rear of the front fuel tank to the engine compartment. Can be seen on the movie at 03:05 and at 06:23.

But I would like to be sure this line/pipe runs all the way outside the hull from the fuel tank to the engine compartment in the gap between the hull and the other fuel tanks.

An other thing appears on the movie at 04:50, between the 5th and 4th fuel tanks, it seems there is a line connector?
Or is it between the 4th and 3rd tanks?

So can we state, even if the design is different, the base lines and connections between the fuel tanks and the engine compartment is exactly the same as the T-55?

Hi;

I Am Not Owen But; The Blast turret next to Miniarm is probably one of the Best Turret's ! The other bieing JB who is out of Finland, the Blast's turret comes with A lot of extra details in resin, and are real Delicate and are easly Broken. The Blast Turret is even harder to find than Miniarm, and is also expensive, and does Not come with A Metal Barrel. You will find Plenty of pic's with the 125mm Gun W/O the Thermo Sleeve or only half of it remaining, the Sleeve was easy to take off. Also it becomes loose after Repeated Fireing of the Main Gun, so you can see in some of your References, with the Sleeve at Different angels on the barrel.

On this note, what would be required to build Tamiya's T-72, as one used in the Chechen conflict? I have one and would like to build it as one used there, but I'm more of a German WW2 kind of guy.

Hi;

Check your references; The T-72BM, T-72 W/ERA,!! Try the e-net just type in Chechen Conflict. You can also use the Search Feature on the Top of our page and just type in what your looking for. As for A Vehicle that was used in Chechnia, the T-80 would be A Better choice, as there was more reference as to there use in the War.

The best kit to build a Chechnyan T-72 would be either Trumpeter's kit 05599 T-72B/B1 or kit 05564 T-72B mod. 1989 They are spendy, but MUCH less expensive than gathering up the items you would need to get the same result from the Tamiya kit.

Augusta, many of the questions you have are going to depend on what you want to build. While ANY T-72 can be depicted without a thermal barrel sleeve, for example, ANY T-72 manufactured after 1981 (when the 2A46M was introduced WITH the thermal sleeve) would automatically have the thermal sleeve unless it was intentionally removed or damaged. There is no good reason NOT to use the thermal sleeve as it helps the barrel retain accuracy.

For the fuel lines...yes, they are missing from the Tamiya kit. They are mostly hidden under the fender straps. But the main one running under the turret back would need to be added. The Trumpeter kits have this fuel line represented.
This is ROUGHLY similar to the T-55, but the lines look different enough that you should really only compare them to the T-72 tank they are on.

Again, what you want to build will determine what you want to start with.

I think I have found the T-72M1 :

A NVA T-72M1 in the three colors scheme during a winter drill.
And to make the kit alive, adding the folllowing figures from Evolution :
The T-72 tank crew http://www.evolution-miniatures.com/35/images/115.jpg
And a sniper aiming his weapon behind the turret : http://www.evolution-miniatures.com/35/images/19.jpg

Only the helmet of the sniper is inaccurate.

I am waiting for the Eduard PE.

Besides, I would like to know which kind of green the NVA used on these photos? A sort of grass green?

Anyone know the difference between SBS SBS35003 & SBS35004
03 is for T72M early 04 is for T72A. I cant see any difference.

I have a Tamiya T72M that I just want to build OOB, just hate that turret, and want a plug in replacement!

Thanks

Hi Firecaptain;

As we have already stated, just use one of the SBS Turret's. The Turret that comes with the Tamiya kit is fine if you want to build A Rare type that was Given to the NVA.
The SBS Turrets are easy to source on ebay, just Don't pick the very early Ural Turret.

GOOD LUCK; MIKE.

Hi,
I think that the turret of Tamiya has some shape issues in its rear part, independently from the version. Its rear should be more protruding backwards in its upper part; besides there should be a flat crescent shaped horizontal surface just behind the waste shells hatch. At least, this resulted comparing it to the turret of a recent kit of Trumpeter. I don't think that the rear part changes between versions.

Hi Massimo;

The T-72 by Tamiya is correct for what it was released for, A very Early Version that was given to the NVA, very few of its type turret were produced. The Tamiya T-72 is o.k. for A OOB type build and is accurate if you make it as the early NVA vehicle. The Turrets that have been produced for the T-72 are as varied and almost impossable to ident; Add to the Confusion by adding vehicles made in Poland, and by the Former Check,replubics. For turret's that are made in 1/35 there are almost as many, ie;) Miniarm, SBS, JS,& A couple of other's !!!! So you can pick & A varient or just purchase A Trumpy, or Meng T-72 !!

CHEERS; MIKE.
