Russian Zil-131 Truck (Early Version) with WinchrnThe Zil-131 has become a very popular subject in 1/35th scale of late, and here we have Bronco Models offering of the Zil-131. This particular model looks to offer the ability to easily and accurately show the hood/bonnet open and has a very nicely detailed firewall.rn

That's good news for fans of softskins in general and alternative dioramas in particular. Any of these babies end up in Vietnam during the war?

I would say why not ? But I've yet to find some pics to confirm this...The NVA truck of choice was the ZiL-157 :

Other truck models were used there as well (GAZ-51/63, ZiL-130, ZiL-150...)

Probably not since they were fielded in 1968 and the latest Soviet truck at the time. My guess is that they were not given to N. Vietnam because they were so new and N. Vietnam had a bunch of older Zil-151 (and a few newer Zil-157) trucks already given to them.

Zvezda has released a 151 ( same chassis as the old Italeri BM-13 kit)

IIRC, the box-art tires are not those included...(you should find some AM ones)

I guess backdating the 157 kit should be doable...

The tires on the Zvezda Zil-151 are incorrect in that they are standard US-style multi-directional tires as used on US CCKW 2 1/2 ton trucks.

Panzer Art offers a set of Zil-151 wheels.

Hobby Boss has also done the Zis-151 (same truck w/new name to honor Stalin ZiS) as opposed to Lenin (ZiL)) which has the correct Russian tires on it.

ZIL-157 is a further development of ZIS-151 with numerous changes in design to improve reliability and performance. 'L' does not stand for Lenin in ZIL title.

Ok, so the L in ZIL apparently stood for the location of the plant, Likhacheva. It was changed to S to honor Stalin though, so I was half-right. I also don't speak Russian. Still the same truck just renamed though.

On a side note, the NVA also used the Chinese-built Jiefang CA-30 on the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail :

Which was a copy of the Soviet ZIL-157 with a different front grill.

ZIS was renamed into ZIL in 1956, 3 years after Stalin's death.
Likhachev was the director of the factory, whom they wanted to honour, it's not a place name.

Like I said, I don't speak Russian, so that is what I deduced. I knew the name change was to honor somebody.

So the 131 should be a ZIL since it was produced after 1956.
The 151 could be either ZIS or ZIL since it was in production before and after the name change.
The 157 should also be only ZIL since it was produced starting in 1958, after the name change as well.

AMO -> ZiS -> ZiL

How about a ZiS (or ZiL ??) 112 ?

Bill

It would possible to build a ZiL-131 in Vietnamese service, but it would probably be a postwar one...

Interesting variant

Mon ami, the Trumpy Jiefang CA-30 ("Liberation") would be perfect for my needs, thanks. Gino, will those resin tires work on the Trumpy kit? I DETEST Trumpeter's nylon tires.

For the CA-30, I guess Hussar ZiL-157 wheel set should fit the bill..

The Panzer Art Zil-151 tires should fit the Trumpy kit too.
