Must be some kind of German Hussar? He's wearing German pattern belt buckle and ammo pouches.

The figure on the right in the boxart is a German Totenkopf Hussar.

Most possibly 1st Life Guard Hussars (1. Leibhusarenregiment Totenkopf)assumed by the colors and the badge on the kolpak, for me it seems to be a skull emblem.
Like here:

Other regiments had the totenkopf badge as well, so it might be an other regiment like the brunswickers. Maybe one of our german forum-mates could shed light on this?

Once again, Masterbox presents an innovative and dynamic set of figures. Perfect for a vignette.

That is a First World War German hussar. However for some reason the artist portrayed him in full color full dress rather than the field grey version of the uniform. The black uniform appears to mark him as a liebhusaren. But he's not an officer as he's wearing triple ammunition pouches as opposed to a pistol.

But why is the British soldier wearing a helmet? Full dress German versus a post 1915 British?

Strelets makes a set of German hussars in 1/72 that I did on commision. I also converted a set into Austro-Hungarian hussars who DID wear full color uniforms until mid 1915. They wore sky blue and red though.

Ironically a good way to see German cavalry uniforms is to look at pilots. Many German pilots were from the cavalry. Richtofen for example was an uhlan. (Lancer)

This is a fanciful artist's rendition not a real event. German cavalry had the braided uniforms but in field grey. And German cavalry did skirmish with British in 1914 but the British were not wearing helmets.

It's like an 1870 German versus a 1918 Brit.

So if I was to paint the German Hussar's uniform in field gray, and swap the Brit's helmet for a cap (ICM's WWl British come with alternate caps), would they then be accurate for a 1914 encounter?

These are the type of WWI Cavalry sets I would like to see. The horses w/gas masks just look strangely cool. It symbolizes WWI well w/gas warfare too.

New Hope Design of the Netherlands made a 54mm Uhlan with horse in a gas mask set. I think Verlinden may also have made a set years ago.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I was not aware that there were cavalry engagements in the Great War. What botheres me was the parade uniform of the hussar. Seem like the Great War has still some secrets. So whats next? Kaiserlische Schutztruppen against Kings African Rifles?

I would like some more stuff in their Napoleonic series. Say a bunch of British Riflemen [The only Force that could keep Sean Bean alive] or the Kings German Legion. And some generic Redcoats.

Or (other time, I know)some Rourks Drift inspired British and Zulu forces. The Victorian times are underrepresented in plastic and I could use some for an RPG or three (Space:1889 / GDW version)

Precisely. I hope to get the set and do that. I'll also how hard it'd be to do Austro-Hungarian Hussars so I can do their sky blue and red uniform. The Belgian Guides also wore a similar uniform in 1914 in green.

Tommy's War has some great British cavalry figures too.

Be nice if the next set was a German uhlan against a French curaisser.

Between Hat and Strelets there's almost everything imaginable in 1/72. I've done all commissions on allthe Strelets cavalry. And I have plans to do both the charges at Balaclava with their figures.

As for red coats there was a compamy that normally does 28mm who did 54mm sets of British peninsular infantry. And some of us have huge stashes of Airfix and Historex figures yet to wade through.
