The AFV Club M60A1 kit comes with two M85 .50 cupola MGs. Does anyone know why? As far as I can tell, you only need one. Nowhere in the instructions does it mention a second one at all.

I want to confirm two are not needed for the kit so I can use one on the Legend M60 cupola on a Dragon M60 since the kit one is way too big.

I can tell you from experience that the tank only used one M85. Are the kit pieces exactly the same?

Yup, two of the same pieces. One is on the main E sprue, the other as a separate piece cut away from the E sprue: but the same # for both.

I too know the actual tank only used one, just making sure AFV Club didn't have you do something with it.

Is it just the barrel or the whole gun? There was a spare barrel carried by the tank in a canvas bag as I recall. Perhaps AFV club thought of that in the kit. Either way, you wouldn't see the barrel inside the turret. I've got the kit in my stash, but it's a little difficult to get to right now.

The kit advertises that the alternative barrel for the blank adapter is included. Check the end of the barrel that it's tapered versus fluted.

Its the whole gun x 2. You can see it on the left sprue in the below pic, and there is a small bag on top of that sprue with another gun in it.

Also, the M60A1 kit doesn't have blank adapters, Hoffman device, or CVKI light in it, those are in the M60A3 kit.

Both flash suppressors are tapered. So neither appears to have a blank adapter.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. You have two M85s. But there's only one feed tray cover.

I think it is due to the quality consideration. As the picture below show the M85 machine gun part from E spure of M60A1 have 2 shrink issues and the barrel was not straight. Sorry I didn't take the picture of additional one since it has been built, but I'm sure it is much better than the original one because I have the same question as Gino when I built the M60A1 and made a comparison. AFV Club use the same E spure in their M60A2 and M60A3 but do not include the additional part and I didn't find the above issue on the same part when I built these 2 later released kits.

I agree, it looks like a replacement part. If that's the case, I'm truly impressed with the QC of the kit-- I've seen other manufacturers lately offering replacement parts for incorrect parts (Academy Priest suspension and Bronco Chaffee turrets). It's great that manufacturers are doing this condsidering the price of kits today. Let's hope this is a continuing trend.

Interesting. I'll have to look at mine again, but I think both are fine w/o sink marks. Bonus!!

Thanks for all the replies.

I confirmed that both of the M85s in my kit are usable. There is a slight sink mark on the body of the gun on the main E sprue, but the barrel is fine. I can use the barrel from that one with the Legend cupola and be good. Thanks for the assistance on this subject.

The M85 on the main sprue in my kit has sink marks exactly where tedward has the larger red square, on both sides. The one on the sub sprue is good to go.

I got my AFV A1 from Merit Direct for $34.99 + $7.84 shipping to KY.
