The obvious joke is they didn't - because none of 'em lasted long enough to use up the factory tank-ful!

But seriously, there are three round covers at the rear of the engine deck - the right-hand one is the fuel cover. See here for a discussion and labelled diagram over at N54.

One of the numbers I remember from the instruction booklet for the Tamiya 1/25 Tiger 1 with interior when I built it as a kid decades ago was the fuel "efficiency" of 1¾ gallons per mile. I can't imagine the Tiger II being any better, so taking the joke the other way, it could be "in the railyard, right after they used up the factory load driving it off the flatcar they shipped it on".
