I've been curious to see everybodies display cabinets/shelves.
Share how you display your finished kits.
I just finally picked up a used display cabinet, and even with the limited amount of models I've built, I can already tell that this one is going to fill up very quickly.
I'm glad that I finally have a place to display them.

Mine are in a transitional process. Previously, I had them on those ugly metal rail-and-bracket shelves you use in your garage or laundry room, but I began rebuilding all the furniture in my office and have started on some actual shelves made from actual wood.
This first pic is of my bookshelf, which incorporates a display shelf just above the midline (baby and cat-proof):
The next two show my under-construction cabinet with display space. The cabinets below will be getting doors, eventually. The main shelf is 18 inches deep, and will have a secondary level added to create a terraced effect and essentially double the space I now have. Above that will be another shelf spanning both walls upon which I will be placing my nautical and railroad kits. Eventually I will be building more display cabinets in the adjoining room which will be traditional wood and glass units large enough to hold my 1/32 aircraft and armor that spills out of here. They will be large enough on top to accommodate my 1/32 B-17G, B-25J, and Revell twin engine Luftwaffe subjects.

I recently added this IKEA Detolf cabinet to my hobby room. Very nice, especially as it sells only for about $60 in Canada. Until I have enough kits worth displaying, I'll use it to house old cameras. Maybe I should have a second one for model kits? In any case, I don't want to fill it until I've added a good lighting kit.

Very nice, especially the 360 degree view it provides.

I knocked this together in a day earlier this year:
(Excuse the poor photo quality--light is not good today and the phone is being recalcitrant)
This is really meant to be temporary until I can get moved into a house of my own (vice a rental), and then I'll come up with something nicer. As it is, I'm approaching maximum density, and have nowhere else to put another set of shelves--Oh, well; guess that means it's time to move!

Mark, is that the old 1/110 scale "Everything is Go" Mercury Capsule and Atlas Booster on the top shelf? Any chance we could see more of it?

Russ,
It's actually a re-release of the original kit, this one commemorating John Glenn's return to space. Having worked on the Atlas program when I was on active duty I couldn't stand the idea of a naked Atlas sitting there without any support so I scratchbuilt the service tower based on whatever photos I could find. I just dropped some quick snaps of it in my gallery.
Unfortunately, this is one of my first builds after taking up the hobby as an adult, and it shows pretty clearly how immature my skills were at the time.

Thanks! Kind of got a thing for M1's and M48/M60's. I've actually built a few more M1's since those pictures were taken.

Mark,
Thanks for posting those photos. On the contrary, I think you've done a masterful job with an old kit-- I'd like to see more of us older modelers "resurrecting some of these old kits. I'm currently building my 1962 "everything is go" Mercury-Atlas kit, using the LVM miniatures Complex 14 LUT. I got my kit for Xmas 1963-- and have always wanted to build it-- going on 53 years now! Your scratchbuilt LUT looks great, as does the Mercury-Atlas. I know this is off topic for lots of Armor Modelers, but bear with us old missile modelers!

Mine are all currently in boxes which is a bummer but I've rearranged my books after buying a new book case and got a friend to cut me some wood to slide in to the spare shelves so I can build and display dios in there 35"x12". I've seen another bookcase at Ikea which has deeper shelves (about 20") so am going to get that as well so I can add more depth to them. At least this way I get to build my dios, use a lot of my built stuff, use some of my stash and have somewhere permanent to display them

I never realized there was kit out there for the tower. That looks really sweet. Certainly makes my scratch-built tower look like doo-doo in comparison, but at $173 it's well outside of my modeling budget.
I hope you'll share with us when yours is done!

Beyond my recommendation of IKEA's Detolf cabinets, I'll mention IKEA also sells a lighting kit called "Dioder". It comes in various versions. The one which interests me is this:
The system can display your choice from seven colours, including white, or it can cycle through them. There's also a white only version, which sells for a bit less.
The Dioder can probably fit just about any cabinet style, and is ideal for the Detolf I have. Hope that's helpful to some of you...

The Detolf's seem nice, but are inadequate for my needs due to the relatively small shelf size. Just to display my aircraft will require a minimum of 20 cabinets and it still won't hold my twin engine bombers, let alone my B-17 or the Lancaster I plan on getting. As for armor, I can fit maybe 3 per shelf so I would need perhaps another 20, and my boats and railway vehicles won't fit either. My sub, Schnellboot and BR50 locomotive are each 3 feet long!
