Tamiya have an etched tool makeing the normal wavy pattern zimmerit. For the squared type seen on stugs a simple tool made from plastic rod works well.
Alternatively AM zimmerit can be bought from Cavalier ... which is quite nice. I dont like the etched zimmerit ...... too flat.

I had made a tool from sheet styrene that had grooves(i forget what they call it, it is for sides of buildings) in it. I used Squardron putty, which sticks to the tool, so you have to remake it from time to time.

Hi,
There are different ways of making zimmerit as well as materials and tools. I myself use only elmer's wood putty as material for zimmerit...I also noticed that it is almost the same color as the original zimmerit used during the war.
Here's a picture of the Panther where I used elmer's interior wood putty...(it's quite cheap a platic cup just cost me about $1)
I used just an exacto knife, used up pre-paid calling card or anything similar in thickness, water and some powder. That is my first attempt in putting a zimmerit (that is why its just a bit thick).
