For no real reason other than I am nostalgic for it, I present the box top from the kit that probably hooked me for life in modeling.
Enjoy.

Found the old Tamiya kit under the tree in 1972. Not sure if I build it, being age 3, but started my passion for armor modelling.

Tamiya's box art has always been top notch. I've framed a few of there's! I even recall, if I'm not mistaken the box saying artwork suitable for framing on the kits years ago!

I have to admit that all those superb TAMIYA "Box-art" in the 70's got me hooked on to building tanks in the first place.
To me they are still very "special" in their whole appearance ... a certain notion/atmosphere todays "Box-art" doesn't transport.
Hope this makes some sense.
Cheers

Indeed inspiring, and some are until today -- well, to me at least. I recall there was a book published by Tamiya (?) of selected box art throughout the years.
I gather this was their first:

Back in the day I did collages of the small box side versions of the art. A number of truly awful kits had gorgeous box art like the AHM 1/87 kits or the KSM 1/40 line.

Re; the first photo of the Tamiya Tiger,, I agree that their box art probably set the standard for other companies to follow. It may have also inadvertently set the standard for having a "pointing German" among the figures. I still have several 70's era kit boxes which I bought while stationed in Japan. Great stuff & great memories!
Even my pick-up is panzer grey.

Those are great old box tops. Perhaps we should make a thread to post oldies but goodies? I started one at Aeroscale. My only request would be use one's own images, or credit the source if it comes from online.

The "pointing German" images/figures are certainly iconic. I never realized that prevalence until reading review comments over the past few years. It inspired my images in some reviews:

I've kept the box art from most of the kits that I've bought save for a few that might have been binned absentmindedly or arrived in too worn a condition (sometimes I get shipped boxes with holes).
Most are from Tamiya but there are a probably a few Dragon and Trumpeters in there since these three are the brands I buy from the most. Some are from the 80's and 90's and look simply excellent. Even the recent kits have great art as well.
I have a good mind to make a scrapbook from all these boxart for nostalgia sake down the road.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed this, but when Tamiya released the Japanese Type 97 tank, it had artwork of the Japanese tank passing a knocked out M4A1 Sherman with the "wolfs head" cartoon (Sherman of the 417th tank Battalion) in the Phillipines. Then, when they released thier older M4A1, they had the same "Wolfs head Sherman" from the 417th in the foreground passing a knocked out Type 97! Same artist. I have not seen the Sherman in that box art for some time, but the Type 97 box art remains the same.

Hi Russ,
Now that's funny! I like that guy's style.
