I'm building a Panzer IV Ausf. D, and am using this photo as reference/inspiration: .

I read this article about the German 3 digit number scheme and some variations, but I am unclear if it was used this early in the war (1941). For instance, here is another 8th Panzer division photo, with what appears to be a single digit number:

In my reference photo, I can obviously see the '8' with the 8th Panzer Division insignia to the up and right of it, but I'm not sure if there was another number that is hidden behind the spare road wheel. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

The markings were standardized but the application was left up to the command.

That Pz IV is from the 8th company. Pz IV's were in the 4th and 8th companies of a panzer regiment.

Look on the hull between the ventilator and the cross, that's the number 11.

So, 8th Company 1st Platoon, 1st Tank. Back then tank 1 was most likely the platoon commanders ride.

Some where on that Pz 38 are the platoon and tank numbers, we just can't see them.

HTH!

Oh, I see! So the 8 on the turret is for 8th company and isn't part of the tank number?

Thanks!
