Can anyone point me in the direction for images of the rear recovery winch on the HEMTT M983A2 tractor? My plan is to convert Trumpeter's M983 into an A2 version.
Thanks in advance,

The version you are talking about is the M983 LET (Light Equipment Transporter). The M983A2/A4 LET tractor is mainly used to transport construction and engineer equipment. It has a 45,000 lbs. (20,430 kg) 2 speed hydraulic winch mounted behind the cab used to load the trailer. It does not have a self-recovery winch. The Trumpeter M983 is already an M983A2 version. The winch doesn't make it an A2, it makes it the LET version used by engineer units.
Here is a drawing of an M983A2 LET.
From what I can tell though, it is mainly M983A4 versions as LETs.

Sorry about that. I should've been more specific in my original posting but it is the M983A2 LET that I plan to convert the existing Trumpeter kit into. Thanks for posting the images. They're a great help.

No issues. The M983A4 LET pics should help since it is basically the same set-up as the M983A2 LET. The winch looks like the same one used on the exterior of the M88A2.
Miniman Factory does the M870A1 trailer to mate to it as well.
This one looks like an M983A2 LET.

That M88 with the Mctags turret is awesome! I'm going to save that image.

There are two pictures of an armored cab version of this vehicle in the Tankograd American Special #3004 on pages 28-29. It is not an A4 and from what I can make out of the winch, it appears to be smaller then the one on the M88, which is rated at 140,000 lbs. in the one source I have . I was considering using a winch from the M1070 as a basis for my build.
Gino thanks for the posting the photos and the capacity info on the winch.

Yep, this is the direction I'm heading. I've already got the Trumpeter M983 and the Miniman Factory M870A1 trailer kits, and I've also picked up the Takom M9 ACE for the load. All that was standing in the way is the rear winch and load binders but thanks to your M983A2 thread, the load binders are taken care of now too.

Good deal, it sounds like you are set. The M1070 winch may be the way to go too. Looking forward to seeing it as you get started on it.

So is the M983A2/A4 LET the same as the regular HEMTT Tractor in every other respect other than having the large deck mounted winch?
As Chris is saying here, it sounds like an excellent and easy conversion to the HEMTT Tractor kit. (With just the addition of a scratch built winch!)

They are basically the same. The LET has the winch in place of the trailer spare tire. Also, there is a roller added at the rear of the frame behind the ramps for the 5th wheel. Additionally, it does not have the self-recovery winch on the right side behind the battery box. In its place is a standard HEMTT square BII box. There are also steps and handrails added to the fuel tank to get up onto the platform. Everything else looks to be the same.

Need to correct myself here. The M88A2 picture that Gino posted and the winch he was referring to is the auxiliary winch. My spec was for the main winch. The auxiliary is rated at 6000 lb. and had 200+ meters of cable on it. Much more then the engineering vehicle which has a smaller drum. The winches on the M1070 are rated at 55000 lbs. If I understand things correctly the load ratings are a function of the hydraulic motor used and for us modelers that I think is a matter of size/dimensions. I need to pull out my M1070 kit and do some piecing together.

Yep,i did. If you want to make a reasonable tractor you will have to do some scratchbuilding. The foundation for the winch is entirely missing. Also the live roller on the back and the reinforced ramps are missing. A lot of details can be found on Tpub. The trailer is asome.

Folks, (especially Gino),
I have the recent Trumpeter kit of the M983A2 with winch behind the cab. So this makes it a LET. As the kit comes with the M870A1 semi trailer, I want to make it a Engineer Unit combo with some engineer equipment. Now my question is: do I need to modify the rear bumper with the roller on top, or could I build it with the standard rear bumper?.
Thanks, Gert

Yes, the rear of the frame should have the roller. All M983A2 LETs have the roller, rear winch, and standard BII box on the right side (in place of the self-recovery winch). There are also steps and handrails added to the fuel tank to get up onto the platform. These items are what makes it an M983A2 LET as opposed to a standard M983A2 tractor.

Thanks Gino,
I knewI would get a decent answer from you to my question. I have a drawing of the modified rear bumper, so I am good to go. One final question: in which units is the standard M983A2 being used?

The standard M983A2 is used as a prime mover for PATRIOT launchers. These are in ADA (Air Defense Artillery) units.

Gert - would you mind please sharing that rear bumper/roller drawing with the rest of us for reference?
Is the roller missing from thcurrent LET kit/ (I have not bought mine yet but it is on the wish list.)

Hi Mike,
May I could also help you. The roller is not included. The complete rear of the trumpeter M983LET is the same like the M983. Check out Henks link which is mentioned above in this thread, in this manual you could find all information which you need to build a better M983 LET. Good luck!
