I just recently got an iPhone and installed an app called iModelKit.
The really cool thing with the app is you can get/create the mix for any of the reference colors out there with the paint you have at home. And I was wondering if anybody has actually used the mixes created by the app to create a color you didn't have on hand, and how accurate was the mix... A great idea, but does it work!??!!

I haven't heard of it, but I'll have to take a look.

I thought the app might have a few more users here at Armorama, so okay I guess it is just to play around with it then.
If anybody is interested I am in no way affiliated with the makers of the app...

Hi Brian....,
Yep, I've that app, had it for afew years, although to be honest haven't really used it too much. It's good because it has the various different manufacturers, Tamiya, Vallejo etc... & they're converted equivalents,
i.e Tamiya XF64 = Model Colour 984.
The camera conversion idea is pretty good too, just hold the camera over something, & it''l give you an equivalent paint colour match....
Good for when you're out the house....
SIMON.

I guess I'm a color geek... I'm always on the lookout for ways of mixing paints to a specific standard/color/whatever
Hadn't got as far as the photo-matching! Way cool. Thanks for the heads up!!

Been using it for years. I bug them now and then to update it.
Great to use when you hit the hobby shop to grab paint only to find what you want is out of stock. Whip out the app and start looking for a substitute and hopefully find something that matches what you want that IS in stock.
Cheers

I figured it out but I was woundering how accurate the paint equival. section is. It wants me to spend 14.99 to use it. I don't want to spend that much if its not that accurate. I only use Tamiya paints so does it give me a mix when matching other brands or just a basic color???

It works with several brands. However, I deleted it after being bombarded with pop up ads. So I'm taking back all of my five stars.
