im builidng trumpeters t62 era kit and ive become obsessed with abandoned vehicles for some reason. my idea was that it was abandoned after the cold war went hot etc. Im gonna use the salt method and vallejos chipping fluid for chipping and rust as ive used it before and liked the results. However any idea how i could do sort of sun faded paint? And any details i need to add to the hull, ive left a lot of to show its abandoned but is there anything that should probably still be on? ive got some track links to add but im gonna do the further into the build when i start thinking about a base.
i primed with vallejos rotbraun so i can use it as a base coat for the rust.
cheers,
Luca

Hi Luca;
The T-62 is Old, But the type that you have, I have not seen in A derelict state. I have seen other types such as the T-64,72,80 & 55s that were deserted, and everthing that could be removed had been striped off. IMHO I dought that the ERA would be still on the Turret, just about the only thing that would still be left would be the Bolt lugs attachments. Even the fender Fuel panners and ZIP Boxes would be absent. You mite want to consider A Burnt out T-62, there you could really practice your artistic licence.
Good Luck; MIKE.

I concur with Mike. Also seems strange the position of the missing track on the left rear side.
Looks good though!! Fun kit to build?

This is looking to be interesting.Yes I know have seen plenty of T-55's and T-72's with ERA in Syria but I think I might have also seen a T-62 with this too.One thing I do know is most of these set ups are field modifications.

Hi mike: I was thinking about removing bits of era here and there but when i was building the kit I wasn't gonna originally go for abandoned hence why there's a lot of kit on the fender which needs removing, is there a way I could convert it to a standard 62?
Hi joe: that bit of track was left off so I could remove the tracks in two pieces, there's a link missing on the top too. But it is a good kit to build, the era was quite a challenge to stay motivated as it kept falling off the turret
Cheers,
Luca

quick update,
i wasnt happy with how the chipping went, just something i dont like about it the paint didnt really scratch and chip like it does in videos, instead it just peeled off. Im not sure why, has anyone else experienced this? but im hoping that with washes etc it will look abit better.
i like it like this now looking back at it
its still wet so hopefully it looks better when it drys
cheers,
luca

Hi,
if you remove a wheel, all the weight of the tank is divided on the other wheels. So their suspension braces should be a bit more compressed (that could be not clearly visible), and the brace without the wheel should rotate downwards because of the action of the uncompressed (or better, untorqued) torsion bar.
I suggest not to make the hull burned, because the heat causes the collapse of all the torsion bars and destroys the rubber rings of the wheels.

I think you may have used too much water when doing your chipping, you don't want to have it pooling on the surface like I am seeing in your pics, and you only want to wet a bit at a time and do relatively small areas. Did you wet the whole model at once before you started chipping? If you did that the paint may have softened too much in the areas you get to last.

I like the concept and subject. I've wanted to do something like this, for some time. I was thinking about making a rusty, partially snow covered, abandoned tank, in a European setting. I think it might be fun to make one in every type of environment, as well. Obviously, humidity and vegetation cover, would vary from place to place, affecting the appearance and rate of decay. A tank under tree cover might not be as faded, etc. I'd assume tanks, in some parts of Africa, would experience almost no moisture...possibly more paint fading, than rusting. Anyway, just a few thoughts. Looking forward to seeing more of your project!
