Hello Folks, I found this old hinged case, so I stuck some chicken wire in both halves, and have laid down plaster wrap on the lower half. Just random wire with no thought of shape in mind. Just a flatish spot somewhere.
The top half, Im not sure to make a 3d background or another diorama that is flat.
I kinda like the idea of a 3d background, I think the box cost me 30 bucks a few years ago, same as building one but Im lazy. So I could have this snap open full 3d diorama and swap models you see kinda sorta.
I will dust it with black tomorrow so you can see the landscape, Ive ended up with a nice Wadi effect I think and the scale seems to be good too.
Plaster bandage is drying and a coat of plaster mix mit pvc glue will go on in a few days.

I poured some plaster on mixed with PVA glue after I wet the base. Poured on some fine granitic sand gave it a bit of a rub to reveal high spots, will let it dry and then give it a brush and see what we have.

No clue about your alcohol and sand question there, but putting your dio inside this box is quite awesome, looking good so far.
